Most Town fans in Portman Road 13:53 - Dec 22 with 2536 views | woodbridge_blue | Assuming that there are approximately 400 Oxford fans attending on Boxing Day, and also that the capacity of Portman Road is now around 29,000, that means that around 28,600 Town fans will be in attendance. When was the last time we had that many Town fans in the ground? I don't know the answer by the way.

Yes, there were a few occasions when we had crowds approaching 35,000 and one where we had over 38,000. I was there at that Leeds games, and I rather doubt Leeds had many more than 5,000 fans there, so that may well be the record number of Ipswich fans, although I've never really understood why that game had our record crowd when we had many more important games. Most Town fans in Portman Road on 17:22 - Dec 22 with 2086 views | PhilTWTD | Record attendance is 38,010 for the Leeds cup match in 1975, which seems to be the peak of Portman Road attendances with 28,476 the record Boxing Day crowd (beat Arsenal 2-0). I assume Leeds weren't given 8,000 tickets for that so that's a starting point on working out the most Town fans in the ground. It's going to be over 30,000, so we've got a bit to go yet!

I reckon 38,010 was when they stopped counting. I too was there. Leeds, of course, have always for some reason had a country-wide fan base - so I think 5,000 is conservative. In those days dads and their lads went through on one turnstile click. Season ticket holders went in a gate manned by an old boy and then tossed their cardboard tickets back over the practice pitch fence and thus sons got in for free to stand on the terraces. So who knows how many really were there?

I don't think that that 1975 game with Leeds was all ticket. Think it was pay on the gate and it got decided that the ground was full with 38010 in there, or however many actually were. I know when we played QPR in 1968 with us both chasing promotion was all ticket as was F.A. Cup against Man U in 1970. There were probably others but all ticket games were very, very rare. Incidently, I think that Leeds game was the one where I was in Churchmans with an Ipswich scarf on one wrist and a Leeds one on the other. Might have been another Leeds game at PR in the early to mid 1970's but I think it was that one.

Portman rd held 36000 prior to the cobbold lower terrace being replaced with seats. This brought the capacity down to 32000. Once the Pioneer Stand was completed in 82/83 the capacity went up to 37000. This was then reduced when the West terrace was replaced with seats in the late 80s.

Did you invent the half and half scarf? I remember my dad telling me how tight it was in the ground, think he would have been in Churchmans as well. Agree, I suspect the crowd might well have been quite different to the official figure.

you are correct ,there wasn't many if any all tickets games then. more people paid on the gate in those days , not many had season tickets. i was one of the last to get into the north stand that day . loads of leeds fans in the north stand that day . you use to get vouchers on certain games which you produced at the ticket office when a game was all ticket e.g. f.a. cup semi final and you didn't know what games them vouchers would be given out , till you turned up at the game.
