Our off the ball play last night was excellent 10:01 - Dec 30 with 959 views | Dubtractor | Seems an odd statement with 2 goals conceded, but one of those was a perfect free kick and the other an admittedly hugely disappointing set piece goal. What I mean really is the energy and tempo, plus intelligence, of our pressing and positioning all game. The second half especially they simply couldn't get out of their own half, and to be honest the first half was much the same apart from a few skirmishes from them. This is across the whole team, with all 10 players putting in some serious legwork to stop them getting a foothold and being able to work crossing positions. Clearly Pompey were set up to try and play on the counter attack, but for the most part we stopped them being able to even do that effectively. We do seem to have a bit of a problem in that teams score from their only real chances against us, and I'm not sure how that is easily fixed. The second also came from a stupid soft freekick giveaway, and against a team that clearly relies on set pieces that is criminal.

Very harsh on Davis based on what he does going forwards, but that second goal last night is unlikely to happen if Leigh is on the pitch. And there's nothing wrong with his attacking either to be fair.

If he is fully fit now then there is an argument about picking a left back based on the opposition. Eg against a team like Oxford that look to play a bit we go for Davis, but a team that just looks to lump the ball into the box might be better for Leigh. That was very clearly a tactical choice of McKenna to see out games earlier in the season, and we may see more of that now Leigh is back.

I don’t think that’s true. The cross favoured Riggott all the way as it was beyond the defender who was backpedaling and with enough time for him to run onto it and attack it. Davis probably should have been better at either getting in the way or trying to jump and put off Rigott but I really don’t think Leigh or even Burgess wins that ball either.

Neither of them would win that header last night.

Our off the ball play last night was excellent on 10:51 - Dec 30 with 787 views | Darth_Koont | Indeed. I like the way that Davis and Burns, on or off the ball, are always stretching the opposition side to side. With Ladapo, Chaplin and Harness working hard and filling the spaces in between, and Morsy/Evans keeping the lid screwed tight whenever the opposition try to get out. Not really sure how the opposition deals with that unless they counter attack at speed or go long. But they rarely if ever look capable of imposing a game plan on us. The flip side of that is that teams now know they need to set up to weather the Ipswich storm. We won’t lose many at all but think we’ll see a few frustrating results and dropped points like last night when we’re leaving the opposition little other option.

It's just a case that sometimes teams will score from a cross. It happens. In most games. How many times have we scored from a ball into the box. Our problem is the fouls as mentioned in the OP and KM spoke of the positioning again to allow the ball to be put into the box. We'd set up selves up for a deep freekick.. we didn't again however cope with a simple couple of passes to change the angles and distrupt the players in the box. Stop the kicker from having a free cross into the box.. that's our problem. Not the defending of crosses.. sometimes you just can't deal with a cross... but the easiest way to deal with them is to not allow them in the first place.
