What was the last ‘big game’ we won? 12:23 - Feb 7 with 5042 views | hatch | Thinking about those important games in sold out stadiums such as Plymouth and Sheff Weds. I can’t recall the last time we won a hyped up game. Loosely the Derby home win but I think we were still expected to win that. Arguably even a win tonight would be the first ‘surprise win’ for a long long time.
What was the last ‘big game’ we won? on 12:28 - Feb 7 with 4668 views | chicoazul | Indeed. We never win the real clutch games and haven’t for years and years. Ipswich is a nice place. Good place to live, generally good fans, isolated, nice lifestyle, we pay good money with long contracts. Much of this is not conducive to success and IMVHO breeds a soft underbelly and a cruising attitude. Hence we never ever win the big games.

This is a good point and at the time I thought so too but it turns out it wasn’t that big a game really, no games that early in the season are big must wins.

This is not a new phenomenon, we have never handled big/pressure games in our history. 3 FA Cup semi finals won 1 lost 2, 4 League Cup semi finals won 0 lost 4 and 8 Play off semi finals won 1 lost 7. It’s in the Clubs DNA I’m afraid.

Strange how, if we get through to a final that we win it.

Your theory holds up… apart from the trophies we’ve won. “Nice place, nice lifestyle, good fans and big contracts - sounds like Barcelona - what have they ever won…

Maybe a couple of summary executions will do the job then, pour encourager les autres?

Yes, but we're not actually allowed to count games we've won in cases like this; that's not the point of the post. Anything we win is taken for granted afterwards despite being built up as a really telling test. See also, Peterborough in December, Derby, Plymouth last season, Wycombe after McK was appointed etc etc.

Plymouth and Wycombe last season were in our new manager bounce and still weren’t wholly unexpected results. I’m talking about games we are not expected to win and then delivering. Peterborough was probably a surprise in Dec but we were in OK form at the time and above them in the league.

This Saturday will be the one. I don't expect anything. But would really be nice to get the 3 points.

Is that because it's on neutral ground. I find at PR while atmosphere can be good on big games it's also nervy and edgy, which in turn can rub off on players. Whereas some other teams the home game is a real cauldron and more intimidating atmosphere

I get that it doesn’t fit the agenda of this season being total misery, but these were all big games we won. As for your second part of a surprise win, how can any win in league one be a surprise win for town? You’d need to go back a few years for one of those.

Weirdly, though we've won every major final* we've contested (FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Play-Offs) it's just getting there that's been the problem (defeats in 7 play-off semis, 4 League Cup semis, 2 FA Cup semis and 1 Full Members Cup semi). *We also won a not so major final - The Texaco Cup in 1973 vs Norwich, over two legs. Derby at home as well. Big crowd, on TV, playing in our third kit at home which could have backfired, Talksport doing a show live from the stadium - all the ingredients were there for a banana skin but we won and looked pretty comfortable tbh.
