What a load of twaddle, fair play to him for sticking to his guns, can imagine he disagreed with them when they told him to probably delete the tweet and not to comment in the future.

Football focus cancelled.

Final score cancelled.

Pundits gone, commentators gone. BBC have annihilated half of their schedule for today because they won't let a man express his personal view.

Have to say hard left and the hard right making themselves look equally stupid as they Wang on about free speech when both do anything they can to shut it down when it suits. Absolutely laugable.

You ruined a good post by throwing the “hard left” in there.

What on earth are you talking about?

I have a question for all the boyos here; you *do know* what it will inevitably mean if this industrial action (of a type) continues for the bbc don’t you? You do know the Tories want the licence fee managed out of existence?

Out of interest I had a look at Lineker's profile last night, v. surprised to see that (unlike many) he doesn't state in it that "all views are my own, not those of my employer" or something along those lines.

I wonder if that might be what led the BBC to act as it did. Think it's pretty daft of Lineker not to have had it there tbh.

That line is fairly meaningless to be honest. I doubt that had any bearing on it.

Yes and it’s a difficult thing to respond to for that reason, people cancelling licence fee payments for example are playing right into its competitors hands, but there’s clearly a need to rethink its craven acquiescence to this government. That ultimately leads to the same destination.

Surely it would have cleared him of any accusations of, as a BBC employee, crossing their guidelines?

Ie it'd have made it obvious he was speaking in a purely private & personal capacity, not with his 'presenter of MotD' hat on.

No, because he's still a BBC contractor (I believe he's a contractor rather than employee) and their guidelines on social media use cover personal social media use. Saying that views are your own isn't really the disclaimer people think it is, if your social media posts cross a line your employer can still take action. In this instance there are very real questions about whether a sports presenter sharing a view on government policy from his personal Twitter account actually breach the BBC's guidelines. Have seen a few posts on social media suggesting that he's not breached their guidelines.

That said, "put a disclaimer in your bio" feels like a sensible enough fall back position for everyone involved to save face.

There's been a few people with seemingly insider knowledge sharing what the BBC's guidance on social media usage says, and it explicitly says that a sports presenter giving a view on politics is low risk of damaging the BBC's reputation for impartiality. They are (usually) more concerned with journalists not being seen to breach impartiality in their personal social media use as it would call into question whether their journalism is impartial. Whereas for Lineker what he thinks of the Tories has no bearing on what he says about whether a VAR offside decision was correct or on him taking the piss out of Alan Shearer for losing his hair.

That was due to be on TalkSPORT anyway (BT Sport TV games usually means TalkSPORT not BBC).

Can’t see the 3 o’clock coverage happening though.

Right old mess this is turning into.... Be interesting to see the fall out... My betting is that Gary will be appeased and return.. Some of the minnions showing solidarity will just disappear from our screens and radios..
Bit pi55ed off Final Score isn't showing. Regular viewer, from 3pm kick off, every week. Always found it the best way to keep tabs on all results, up and down the country, as they happen.....
Not a fan of MOTD, tbh..Should have changed the name to The Prem' Show, years ago.. And I've thought, for a long time, that Linekar, is overdue replacing.Been on there a long time now.

Ah, well, after the midday news, there was an announcement that "the scheduled programme will not now go ahead; instead we have a podcast for you" (which is football chat).

What was scheduled was '12:00. 5 Live SportSaturday sports build-up. Mark Chapman presents build-up to today's Premier League football.'

No Mark "Chappers" Chapman anywhere near the airwaves is the best thing to come from all this.
