List of big clubs 13:16 - Apr 8 with 7066 viewsChurchman

Somebody on Owlstalk has posted the following under the title of ‘What makes a big club’. One persons categorisation was as follows:

Elite group

Liverpool
Man United
Spurs
Everton

Massive clubs

Arsenal
Man City
Villa
Wednesday
Newcastle
Leeds

Decent sized clubs

Chelsea
Sunderland
Wolves
Forest
Shef Utd
Norwich
West Ham

Medium sized clubs

Derby
Leicester
Birmingham
Bradford
Portsmouth
Ipswich
Crystal Palace

Aside from the fact of who cares, I think this says an awful lot about some Wednesday supporters’ attitude and entitlement. If they think they’re in the same bracket as Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle and Leeds, they need to lay off the booze. Sunderland have a much bigger following and more illustrious history too.

Honestly their “entitlement” is beyond belief

Living up here for the last 10 years has certainly opened my eyes to two sets of football fans in one city and how different they carry themselves

So much time for The Blades but the Wendies set of fans are cringy , blinkered and totally full of self importance

Long may it continue because they will seriously implode even more so than they are right now not only as a fan base but as a club

The longer they’re in this league the more it will cripple them

Just read Harry Pearson's excellent book the The Further Corner. A Newcastle supporting mate of his describes pre take over NUFC as a small club that just happens to be watched by 50,000 people.

Norwich in the category above us!! That Wendies fan has put the inbred trophy dodgers in the same category as European cup winners Chelsea and Forest!!

Also they’ve put themselves in the category above!!

That list is absolutely insane.

Spurs as well, not sure how anyone can call those trophy dodgers an elite club.

Someone’s seriously overdosing on on the Easter Chocolate.
Everton as an elite club!
Wednesday bigger than Chelsea!
Norwich decent size !
Leicester below them and a medium size!
Town in the same bracket as Pompey says it all.

So, Everton, who have won the top tier 4 times since the war, the F.A. Cup never and have one European trophy are “elite”, while Arsenal who have won the league 8 times since the war and the F.A. Cup 14 times are merely "massive". I was tempted to read on for comedy value, but then noticing that Man City are not yet elite (has anyone told Pep?) I decided to cut my nails instead

POSTERS on cup stat: correction duly revised to Everton won cup 5 times. To any elite Evertonian : humble apologies.

I'd have us on par with the likes of Forest, Sheffield United and perhaps even Wolves really, I know they had a good phase in the 50's was it but in the modern era, they have been fairly similar to us in terms of ballsing up the playoffs fairly regularly

Everton have won the F.A.Cup twice, since the war. 1966 and 1984.
For the avoidance of doubt I'm not suggesting Everton are an elite club.

This 'how big is a club' stuff is nonsense. Who cares? Just enjoy supporting your own team. I find it embarrassing when some of our supporters try to 'large it' over other clubs. Every football club is a great and noble thing for its local community, just enjoy your own.

There’s so many things wrong here I don’t know where to start.

1) Spurs elite? Lol. Bigger than Arsenal? Lol.
2) Everton? They’re not elite.
3) Wednesday in the same tier as Leeds, Arsenal, City, Newcastle and Villa. Insane.
4) Chelsea lower than Wednesday? Sunderland lower than Wednesday? Jesus wept.
5) Scum above us? Ridiculous.
6) Bradford making the list but Southampton not? Madness.

Sawtrich is right, it is nonsense. Here's my attempt. (Stuff in brackets are minimum requirements)

Elite (Significant European success, dominant domestically, big fanbase)
Liverpool
Man Utd

Massive (Some European success, dominant domestically, big fanbase)
Arsenal

Big (Signifcant haul of trophies Europe and domestic combined, big fanbase)
Chelsea (pains me)
Man City (pains me)
Tottenham
Aston Villa
Everton

Significant clubs (success in Europe, won the league, medium fanbase)
Newcastle
Nottingham Forest
Leeds
Ipswich

Notable clubs (success in Europe or domestic, medium fanbase)
Wolves
Blackburn
Sunderland
Sheff Wednesday
West Brom
Leicester
West Ham (success in Europe twice, but no league win. Tough to place)
Sheff Utd
Huddersfield
Portsmouth
Burnley
Preston
Derby

They wish they were notable (won a cup, never won the league, medium size support)
Birmingham
Norwich
Cardiff
Middlesborough
Crystal Palace
Coventry
Southampton
Stoke
QPR
Blackpool
Charlton
Barnsley (sorry, I like the fans)
Brighton

Really, you won that, fair play (Punched abover their weight once, small fanbase)
Bury (RIP)
Swindon
Fulham (Intertoto cup success! - but haven't won the league or cup)
Wigan
Swansea (maybe wish they were notable)
Luton
Reading
Wimbledon
Oxford
Bradford
Notts County

They've qualified for the UEFA cup 3 times.
However, 2 of those seasons they were banned (Heysel).

They played a German team (and lost) in the 2nd round of the one UEFA competition they did get to play in but it wasn't Bayern Munich.

As all Town fans know, if you don't beat Bayern Munich at their ground in an early round then you have no European history that counts.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

There's obviously lots of different criteria than can be applied to each group. But foe some of these teams i just have no idea what they're thinking!
Everton and spurs being elite is laughable, Wednesday bigger than Chelsea and wtf are Bradford included?!

Newcastle are bigger than spurs without a doubt.

And there’s no way that we are bigger than West Ham or sunderland. No chance

Spurs have won 26 trophies, Newcastle have won 14. Their support base is similar. Spurs have had significantly more European success. There is no doubt Spurs are a bigger club

After typing it all out, I was tempted to creat a new group of notable overachievers which would be:
Wolves
Blackburn
Sunderland
Sheff Wed
West Ham (European success, despite no league win)
Ipswich

But hey, I said it was nonsense, and choose the categories then the teams.

Bigger than Chelsea? I’d like to see their workings there. Even if they were a bit rubbish before the 21st century, I’m not sure how Chelsea’s 5 Premier Leagues and 2 Champions Leagues amounts to less than what Wednesday have achieved.
