I think it was another of their myriad of mis-calculations. Those who populism appeals to would never have voted Conservative 25 years ago and that is the demographic least likely to have valid ID. . It's contemporary Labour's more balanced and sensible stance that appeal to the increasing educated working class and lower middle class who between them must make up a majority of the population. What's the odds that the policy is scrapped beofre the next General Election? High I think.

Did the photo voter ID requirement backfire on The Tories? on 07:36 - May 6 with 1047 views
There was a 60+ couple voting at the same time I was and one was turned away because he had forgotten his ID. Trying not to automatically assuming he was a tory, but they looked Daily Mail.
His misses gave him such a telling off

It's not pointless though. It is an attempt to stop those who would vote other than Conservaitve from doing so. A similar thing happened in Florida when they banned postal voting before realising that the majority of those who use postal votes were the over 60s who largely vote Repubican and they lost seats in the State Senate. They then ammended the law so only those aged 59 or younger were prohibited from doing so.
