When deportation is a good thing 06:38 - May 17 with 961 viewsgtsb1966

"The BBC spoke to dozens of people on several of these deportation flights last month, and found that most came from UK prisons"

"One cheerful 30-year-old man said he had been serving a six-year sentence for drug offences".

We've always been able to deport convicted criminals to their country of origin. I'm not sure paying them to go back is a great idea though, especially when they can just try to re-enter the country again. Nothing this government has introduced is or will be remotely effective when it comes to migration, partly because it suits them to have a system that's broken so they can keep the hard of thinking angry about immigration.

Totally agree about the re-entry especially when it refers to someone who has been back three times.

They don't elaborate in the articles on why they are paying. I assume so it doesn't get tied up in the courts? Probably does work out cheaper.

Does strike me as wrong but might be pragmatic.

I suspect that they are bribing prisoners to go so that they can claim to the electorate that they’ve deported so many and are the party tough on crime - whilst neglecting to mention the bribery aspect as well as the fact that they committed crimes in the first place.

Possibly, although I'd assume that as with all appeals they'd need to have grounds to appeal in the first place, and usually convicted criminals struggle on that front as the legislation is pretty clear.
