'He said it was “Orwellian language” to suggest that talking to a controversial figure automatically means you shared their views. “I shared a platform with [Conservative Tees Valley mayor] Ben Houchen the other week. Does that make me a Tory?” he said.

He contrasted his own treatment with that of Christian Wakeford, the MP for Bury South in Greater Manchester, who defected from the Conservatives last year “and was welcomed with open arms by the Labour party, despite voting for many terrible Tory policies”.'

i suspect ken loach films are one of those things people feel they ought to like. liking them being more a political statement than an expression of enjoyment.

Labour says £28bn green prosperity plan in doubt
Labour has admitted that its £28bn green prosperity plan may have to be watered down.
The £28bn figure, previously given by Labour, would instead be a target to work towards,
Reeves said, rather than the initial sum allocated for the plan in the first year of government, as the party had previously pledged.

would you advise that i watch city slickers 1 first?

because crashing the economy a la truss with interest rates rising and the £ falling would be good? or would the constraints acting on truss not affect a labour government. actually a recession is really quite a green move.

There is a genuine difficulty for Labour to be elected that they have to be 'credible' and the average voter is happy to believe they'll spend all the money etc.

Obviously there isn't a paralell universe where they can be going down a different path, but that they are doing is working with regards to getting in power and until they do that they can't acheieve anything.

I do think it is underestimated just how difficult it is for a Labour govt to win power

I fail to see how the original plan would crash the economy, but you're right. Best just leave things as they are but come up with a catchy slogan. I'd go for "tough on climate change, tough on the causes of climate change." Problem solved.

I am no economist but my understanding is that the so-called Golden Rule is such that borrowing to invest (which my understanding is what Labour's green investment involves) is a good thing, and something that the Cameron and subsequent Tory governments didn't do, the result of which we are still seeing with low growth.

This is undoubtedly a shame - personally, I'd be throwing more money at it, not less as a clear two-for. If cuts need to be made, get rid of the triple lock on pensions.

I don't disagree, think big investment is the way out of this - but just talking more politically and what the attack lines will be. Labour spend, spend, spend....they can't be trusted with your money etc.

The average voter will still think this despite the last 13 years

i agree that it's a priority. but repeating the truss crisis and having interest rates rise higher won't help the green transition. if they can hit the additional £28 billion annually in the 2nd half of their first term that's a major win - much better than going down in flames in the first months.

No, you’re on the wrong side of history because you can’t seem to grasp the lessons of the past and the present.

Your and Labour’s largely invisible opposition to the status quo and the long-standing challenges facing the UK and its people ultimately serves no-one. We already have the Tories and the GB News fantasists for that. We don’t need an opposition party that sews it all up.

That’s before we even try to anticipate the effects and side-effects of the real global challenges of climate change, disease, AI and automation on a country that is already so socio-economically and politically unbalanced.

It’s a shyte state of affairs to be in. And all the red rosettes in the world won’t make any f***ing difference.

That's fair comment but the following suggests an artificial fiscal rule (along the lines of the nonsense ones that the Cameron government had) may well trump everything.

the labour party doesn't represent your views. your views don't represent the vast majority of the electorate. labour aims to bring together enough of the electorate to form a government and change things. you don't support labour.

is there anything more that needs to be said?

Yes. Where does your belief come from that they will change things when elected? What about them and their backers suggests that change is even on the agenda?

Or are you using “change” in the ironic Change UK sense?

I agree that national debt is getting to unsustainable levels, further borrowing is going to see even more crippling interest payments (which is an inconvenient truth that people are either unaware of or willfully overlook). Here’s some facts for you; interest on our nation debt is expected to be TWICE as much as was paid out in furlough money, it now represents 5pc of all public spending. Money which could be spend on public service is being spaffed away servicing debt.

BUT if our politicians had their shi1t together and planned long term rather than for their 5 year term, a credible long term spending plan could pay for itself. If we were genuine world leaders in renewable energy with state owned assets we could 1) stop wasting tax payers money on subsidising multi-billion oil majors, 2) MAKE money by selling electric from our grid to our neighbours.

Lessons that the PLP and the now ruling Labour right are vehemently anti-social democracy and are closer to David Cameron than an actual opposition party and alternative.

The internal sabotage and briefings to journalists against the leadership with the subsequent authoritarian and anti-democratic purge of left-wingers once they stole back control shows that, when it comes down to it, they’re just the status quo’s B team and far, far too many of them are looking to get paid.

Change is not on their self-interested agenda nor that of their donors and supporters. And crucially, (because there are still some good people in there) it’s not on the leadership’s agenda that has almost complete top-down control so the “sweetcorn” in the party either go along with it or will be sidelined and even deselected.

I know that sounds like your wet dream but it’s nothing I can support when there is so much more we could and should be doing for the country as a whole.
