Veg....what are you growing this year. Any early successes. 19:16 - Jun 12 with 2576 views | BanksterDebtSlave | Putting in an asparagus bed was definitely the most cost efficient use of space ever and my piss has never smelt so bad for so long. Broad beans, if you haven’t grown your own you've never tasted a good one....just started eating them. This years novelty grow is a loofah plant...anybody grown one before and got to scratch their back with it? Epic fail this year was purple sprouting as last year was too dry for them to get established enough to survive Winter.

Any good car boot sales over your way for plants ?

For those who haven't grown them before, remember to water the whole bed (not just individual plants, as the roots are so shallow & wide) from March onwards even when nothing's showing, they need wet & warmth to 'wake them up'. Need frost protection too. I grow other things that are expensive and/or hard to source and/or that shops seem incapable of selling in good fresh condition - globe & jerusalem fartichokes (very easy; the jerusalems grow about 6 inches a day to a height of 12 feet & will give good shade for lettuces); Celtuce (delicious, grow to about 3 feet & also give shade to lettuces; lettuces (Green Salad Bowl are a 'cut & come again' type which are less prone to bolt); spring onions, leeks (Below Zero is my fav in this Pennine climate); runner beans; courgettes; potatoes; a shop bought parsnip was too elderly to eat last summer so I stuck it in the ground, it survived the winter, has grown to about 5 feet & is producing loadsa seed! All growing well now, but yet another dry spring/early summer, 4th in a row I think, is a worrying pattern. Tend to water deep every other day which encourages roots to search downwards, better than daily but shallow watering. Some of these, like the Jerusalem artichokes, spuds & parsnip, are just ordinary supermarket items that I've stuck in the ground & they've grown on. [Post edited 13 Jun 2023 8:21]

Nothing has touched the rhubarb and gooseberries so I got something from them for the first time. I’d add that sweetcorn is the best home grown veg - and courgettes probably the worst - tough the chickens seem to enjoy them

I have two fig trees growing 600' up on the Pennines, one in greenhouse, one in an oak half-barrel against S facing wall, both bought from Waitrose about 5 years ago; both productive (about 15 figs each p/a) :)

Nice. My old fella planted one when they relocated up to North Wales about 15 yrs ago. I wish I could have brought it with me when I had to sell his house - hundreds of figs on it. It was massive (10 ft across at least). It had the advantage of being in a sheltered spot near the coast, which is probably a bit more optimal than in the Pennines!

Wonderful. Yes, my parents planted one in the ground in the angle between S & W facing walls of our Surrey family home when I was a toddler. By the time I'd grown up it was about 14 (?) ft high but nothing like as big as yours across - still very productive though, must have got a good 50 off it p/a.

The cabbages are looking OK, but not sure how well they’ll do yet. Strawberries and raspberries are looking good at the moment as well. Tomatoes and three chilli plants in the greenhouse. I’ve never grown chillis before so we’ll see how that goes. We have a fig tree which gives us no fruit, it’s up against a south facing fence and has been planted as it should be but nada. I’m lucky enough to have someone down the road who grows various things to seedling stage and then sells them from his driveway which means that they’re pretty cheap and there’s always something that I’ve not tried before that I can take a punt on, that’s where the chillis came from. Also, if I've been a bit disorganised with sowing my own seeds like I was this year, I can just buy from him. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
