That's a shame but a good set up for the wicket. 263 ahead with Broad and Jimmy in.

I've seen them add 50-odd against SA at Lord's. Even half of that now would help a lot.

280 would give us a chance.

'Give us a chance' is an understatement. 280 is defendable. Would be in the top 50 successful run chases, roughly second highest at Edgbaston.

280 it is then.

Valuable wag of the tail. Robbo, Broad and Jimmy put a very nice 49 on there, would certainly have taken that an hour or so ago. In fact the final 3 outscored the first 3 with Crawley, Duckett and Pope only scoring 40 between them.

Pitch isn't doing a great deal though.

I make it about 50:50. Set up brilliantly now.

Would say the Australians have the upper hand, especially as we don’t know how Moeen Ali’s finger will affect him. Only about 20 short, and a lot of what if’s about how England could have got them - the declaration, the missed chances, the unnecessary no balls, the silly shots in the second innings in particular…

The fielding from the Aussies was excellent in that innings. England need to replicate that standard.

Suspect the conditions may favour England more tomorrow - some cloud, possible rain delays. A couple of wickets this evening would make a huge difference. Fair point about the pitch, though was some swing and movement off the seam. Main question mark will be how much Ali can bowl.

Agree roughly 50:50, though would marginally prefer to be in their shoes.

Yeah Aussies did really well in the field to be fair, plus a few cheap wickets from us I thought that were something of a gift.

Hopefully Ali's finger isn't too bad as we'll need him. I too would probably rather be in their shoes chasing 280, especially with the batting attack they have and on this wicket.

Hopefully they're starting tomorrow with a bit of cloud and with 2 or 3 wickets down and feeling the pressure.

Didn't realise it was 42 overs left - mammoth session if Ali can't bowl much.

Well Bairstow has picked up where he left off.

I would have preferred for Bairstow to open (instead of Duckett) and Foakes have the gloves, but easy to say that now given their respective runs and fielding performances (so far)

Quire frankly, this game should be out of Australia's reach. I'll be gutted if we lose this.

The mass call was for Crawley to be dropped for Bairstow, in fairness, and he scored well in the first innings.

The pitch is still pretty docile to be fair. 280 is very chaseable on this track. Big chand we missed in the first over, which is rather in keeping with our fielding in this test in general. That's the one area where Australia have outperformed us, they've snapped up some tricky half chances and we've missed some sitters.

It seems to me we've gone from one extreme to another. Previously players got out for low scores just poking at things when they might as well have had a swing at it. Now we're just swinging at everything.

I can't believe on this pitch that no-one would have reached 50 had they just played with a bit of discipline.

Looks ominous. The runs we left out there first innings looking important now. Time is not an issue.

Was the missed opportunities in the field and too many no balls, rather than early declaration, that really cost the 50 - 100 runs.

Today is quite frustrating really, we negated what might have been a tricky start after the wickets yesterday but haven't made the most of so many good positions.

It certainly favours Australia at the moment (36/0), need some wickets to make them think a bit as they've not been great chasing recently.

Feel like we've spent a lot of the first four days in the ascendancy but without fully capitalising. Today, too many got out after getting a start when if we'd had one of our top 6 hang around and get 80 plus we'd have set them over 300 and been in the driving seat. The missed chances have also been very frustrating. Beeb saying Casey has taken 9 of 10 chances to Bairstow's 1 of 5, the Aussies taking 12 of 15 overall versus 5 of 10 for us. That might end up being the difference. That said, a couple of quick wickets and the complexion of the game changes totally.
