Summer Recruitment 09:24 - Aug 31 with 5701 viewsTalkingBlues

I was banging on about it being poor back in July, here we are 24 hours away from deadline and we’ve missed virtually every target we’ve bid for and will now be scrambling around for what we can get on deadline day, Ahadme MKII is in full swing.

How are we all feeling about signings with a day to go?

The thing that worries me slightly is we haven’t actually been able to convince anyone *new* to join us permanently. Hirst was already sold on the project last season and Taylor was begging to join us in January but told to wait 6 months. Anyone we’ve had first contact with this summer has obviously not materialised into a move for whatever reason, not sure if we’ll find out why.

If you ignore all the targets we've signed we've definitely missed out on virtually all the players we were after.

Clearly we haven't missed out on every target we've been in for as we have landed several already.

That being said, I don't believe we have recruited well enough thus far to be troubling the top 6 this season IMHO.

Still time remaing in the window though so let's see where we are this time on Saturday before making too many sweeping statements.

Oh go on then, list your evidence that we have bid and missed out on all the rumoured players. They are just that, rumours and some may have been true but the large majority are fantasy.

I know you don't follow Town closely, but most of our signings are unexpected so I will leave you to work out how good the rumour mill is for ITFC.

I dare you to be positive .. go on say 1 nice thing about the team or management.

What a load of'Tony Dining' trash rewind to january where we recruited really well and have bought player in the championahip you would be happy with , yes in an odeal world the icing on the cake would be a centre back and striker permanent siging but thats a 10/10 'window no point buying just for sake of it if it aint available wait like with hirst and taylor .

Good morning Mr Positive.

What is it about extending the contracts of the likes of Chaplin and McKenna, the signings of Luongo, Hirst, Taylor, Slicker, Hutchinson and Williams and the moving on of some League 1 squad players that contributed to our recent success that has you so down?

Probably the fact we still have the same 1st team as in league one, despite Ashton and Mckenna repeatedly saying there will be '2 or 3 more in the door'. Happy to completely change my mind come the end of tomorrow but there is nothing 'relentless' about slightly improving our bench and extending a couple of existing contracts.

Under ordinary circumstances I wouldn't have much issue with this, but it was the suggestion of so much more both in terms of players and with the whole 'what got us here won't get us there' etc.. If that is true then we wont be going 'there'.

I don't think we will do badly this season with the current squad, certainly not worried about relegation, but I think IF nothing else comes in Ashton has ran his mouth too much and got fans expecting much more.

Slicker

He wasn’t brought in to improve the first team, he’s a 3rd choice keeper who barring disaster won’t play a minute of league action and won’t have any impact on where we finish.

I’m unsure why so many downvotes on this thread. Seems to be a lot of people in the positive brigade but it’s pretty clear things haven’t / aren’t going to plan in this window. Ashton literally said a month ago we were down the line on 2/3 signings and we’ve signed 1 player since. Let’s see where we are this time tomorrow but I am quite concerned over the fact we’ve heard absolutely nothing since Williams signed. If we want to compete (which the club has said we are not here to make up the numbers) we have to buy some players to improve our 11 today..

Best laid plans of mice and men - this is football.

I don't think anyone is saying we've had the best summer transfer window but to suggest it has been poor is wholly wrong.

As both Ashton and McKenna have made clear, they want the 'right' people through the door and I'd rather that be the case than 'sign anyone to appease fans'.

From what we've seen of this league so far, plenty to suggest we'll be more than just fine.

So it’s basically the same team who set new ITFC records. The same team who were a championship team playing in league 1 after Christmas.

Damn.

This is what winds me up. People look at the league we were in last season and conclude we're a L1 side. It's such a silly way of looking at things. We're not, and we weren't then in anything but league status, especially post January additions. We battered most of the sides we came up against, hammered Championship opposition in the cup, took the runaway Championship winners very close in a 2nd leg and have taken to this league like a duck to water. We gave a very strong account of ourselves against Leeds who have spent the past 3 years in the Premier League and have an £80m front 4. We're firmly a comfortable Championship outfit on and off the pitch as it stands right now.

That's not to say I don't want a couple of quality additions, and I do think we need them if we're to challenge for the top 6. But the suggestion that the side is similar to the one that took us up therefore it's not good enough for this level is ridiculous.

The other part of this is we're competing in a much bigger pool of clubs for players now.
Last season we were a big fish. Now, we're just another fish, and, as a promoted club, we'll need to convince players that we're truly on the up.
If we're top half come end of the season, our recruiting next summer will be a LOT easier.

I don't think we have done especially badly given the inflated market with all the Saudi money and 3 big clubs coming down from the prem. I think those factors mean that with FFP we have been priced out of nearly anything worth buying, with thick competition from clubs in similar positions.

I think the major mistake has been the repeated use of language used by Ashton (and on occasions McKenna) that would imply we are signing several first team upgrades. This (rightfully) has got fans expecting this. I also think once you get a couple of injuries to key players (which by chance happens to most teams) in our first 11 the quality drops quite a lot in some positions. Our impressive start has been done before we see the effect of having 2-3 players out injured at any one time, or potentially more if we are unlucky.

p.s. I do love McKenna, just to clear that up.

That's funny, I could have sworn we signed Luongo, Taylor, Hirst, Hutchinson, Williams and Slicker?

So not missing out on virtually every target.

Ashton has set himself up for a fall though by claiming we'd sign at least 2 or 3 more a couple of weeks ago.

It is very evident that Ashton/the owners have found this window far harder than they expected. We are certainly not where we intended to be. This is the first summer in ages where several clubs outside the parachutes have decent funds to spend, and the three that have come down are all 'big clubs' able to spend accordingly too. Fees are inflated.

Quite, and constrained by FFP. £1m gets you a top player in L1, in the top 1/3 of the Championship it barely gets you a bench warmer. I'm not sure who fans think we can pluck out of our ar5e that'll dominate the division while staying within the financial headroom.

Fans are impatient, I get that. But quite honestly if we finish in the top half this season and consolidate then that's a decent outcome for me. We've probably got 10+ players in our squad where that's likely their ceiling on a good day, the likes of Aluko, Hladky, Harness, Jackson, Donacien, Evans, Ladapo. We're not going to rotate all of those in 1 window while retaining the togetherness and familiarity that's one of our biggest assets, even if we could spend to that extent. It'll take a few windows of moving 3 or 4 on and upgrading them. Our squad today is significantly stronger than it was 12 months ago, and dare say it will be again 12 months from now.

The point raised was that we hadn’t attracted anyone new, we have

The point wasn’t whether that person would immediately add to the first team

Williams had worked with McKenna before too. Taylor aside, the only two ‘new’ players, with no links to either the club or the management team are Slicker and Hutchinson, neither of whom are upgrades on the starting XI. And, as said, Taylor had been courted for ages before joining.

I do think it’s been a very strange market this year, quiet yet expensive, and the likes of Birmingham, Hull and Stoke having additional income isn’t helping in the slightest. Both Ashton and McKenna have raised expectations by communicating the wish for two to three more players, so cannot be surprised if the fanbase is becoming tense at the lack of signings.

We were told 2-3 more and since then have signed one (Williams). In fairness I'd rather sign nobody than players for the sake of. We've a squad that can compete at this level and I want players that can enhance the squad as does the manager an approach I'm happy with.
