Currently a 5pt gap to PNE in 3rd 21:29 - Oct 4 with 5563 viewsMullet

If we make it 8pts on Saturday that puts massive daylight between us and the pack. Feels like Saturday takes on a different dimension than when PNE were above us. It's weird how real this season is getting so early.

Tbf. I did wonder if Ashton may have made some cheeky phone calls already.

9 points clear of 5th, after 10 games, is frankly ridiculous. We've already bought ourselves a few slips and we'll still be top six - not that we're going to slip up.....

Although if Sunderland also win on Sat they would still be 6 points behind, but still a gap.

I'm sure PNE going to be bang up for it on Saturday to try and get something otherwise they've not had a very good week.

No complacency here.

Sunderland can go 2 points ahead of PNE if we beat them and they win but yes, some gaps emerging which is great.

The gap emerging between us and 7th feels like a big psychological cushion for when we inevitably have a bad day at some point. Did not imagine us finding ourselves in this position ten games in, not even in my wildest dreams at the start of the season.

It’s a false economy though because we’ve played all the easy teams and they’ve played all the difficult teams.

Looking at our fixtures past Preston, we really do have a much easier run.
Beat Preston on Saturday and our fixtures do look more favourable.

If you occasionally frequent the Oinkun forum, you will be well aware that they will still be absolutely convinced that this is the case when the last ball has been kicked in May. A peculiar logic rules in darkest Norfolk.

I've gone from pre season where I really did believe we could be a good side at this level, and backing us for the top 8 with a shout of the playoffs. I saw enough last season to suggest we didn't just scrape promotion as the league table might suggest, but completely blew sides out of the water in the last few months, in what were some difficult fixtures. Technically, tactically and mentally strong, well coached and well organised, driven, motivated, and with momentum. Quiet optimism was the name of the game. We were never coming up as just A N Other league 1 side promoted to the Championship, we always had way more than that in our locker.

Fast forward <2 months since the opening day and I'm say here thinking 'playoffs would be good, but they're a complete lottery innit and the competition in them will be fierce. We should be now gunning for top 2'.

Still a long way to go of course, and if you offered me 6th now I would probably take it and hope we can do the business in the playoffs, but the fact we're sitting here dreaming it could be even better than that is madness really.

All going well but we must keep our feet on the ground. McKenna and I suggest most on the players know there's a heck of a long way to go before we even think that there's a chance of Premier League football. We only have to look at a recent game where Morsy was out and we aren't the same team without him. If for instance he missed half a dozen games would we still be near the top ? We have a team that is obviously enjoying itself and while we can keep that harmony and results going there's no reason to think we can't keep where we are but no doubt there will be other teams that have similar asprirations as Town. Should we be fortunate enough to stay near the top it will be necessary to buy in the January window and then strengthen further in the summer as although we have a decent midfield and a forward line that functions well we made need to strengthen all areas and a few may need moving on.

We've had an extra day of rest, also home game for us, they have had an exhaustive run around at Leicester, to then get home for a day and then travel down here.

We should be putting them to the sword.

I wouldn't take 6th at this point but know what you're saying.

To some extent I'm not overly bothered. I'm so confident we'll do it at some point in the next couple of years.

It's just so early in the season. But it's hard not to get carried away. Even more key then the points is the performances. Just fantastic.

All that being said he's another good thought. If we win against PNE we only need another 53 points in 35 games to reach 81 points (what secured auto last year). That's just 1.5 point a game! That below playoff form for the rest of the season....

Not that I've just stand worked that out.

This is the thing that is beginning to make me think that we might just do it this year. Our form would have to drop below anything it's been since the turn of the year for us to miss out on the P/O's and I just don't think that's going to happen. I do believe that we are too good a team to average 1.5pts a game for long.

Every game we win or draw just takes a bit more the pressure off the rest of the season.
