Let’s not have any catastrophising 22:10 - Nov 7 with 4324 viewsSomethingBlue

I’m hearing again that we have been in poor form since the international break. If eight points from four tight games, three of those away, is poor form then I need a dictionary. Not the best tonight but not the worst - there is a clear drop off in incisiveness when we lose two or three key players but that is where our squad is currently, so let’s be kind and celebrate the fact we’ve lost once in the opening third of the season and have a fantastic chance.

They’re not - but we have injuries and before the int break we were playing our best football in more than 20 years. We’ve reverted to being very good, rather than breathtaking. There will be ups and downs, big time, and people need to remember where we’ve come from & keep cool heads.

Hard not to be a bit disappointed about tonight in isolation for a few reasons but think our fast start has shifted people's expectations slightly too much and at the end of the day you can't argue with being 8 points clear of 3rd at this stage.

As you cover in the OP, one thing I think is clear now is that despite the ability of some of the 'subs' to come in and show good moments, there's a pretty big drop off in quality between the likes of Broadhead/Harness, Hirst/Ladapo, Burns (and I'd even say Omari now)/Jackson.

Home game on Saturday and a good chance to get a win before another break where hopefully Burns is back and anyone else not 100% can recover and we can hit a very awkward looking festive period head on.

Some of our players no doubt having to play with knocks, given the reported illness in the camp, might explain a lot.

Agree with that but suspect it is going to be much harder to pull off transfer business anywhere near equivalent to last year. Will be a very tight market with few players available at a price the club will pay.

It will interesting to see what McKenna wants to add to the squad and starting line up. Recent games will be telling him quite a lot about the gaps and weaknesses.

This is true – asking prices will be ridiculous and loan players will want game time. Can't immediately think of obvious domestic-based names who fit the brief. We clearly need to upgrade our options at No9 and perhaps in the left-sided attacking/No10 position. Another body needed for central midfield too, although I thought Taylor did a very effective job attacking the spaces tonight quite aside from his fortunate goal.

Assuming we enter Jan in a decent top-six position I'd expect McKenna and the owners to be ruthless where possible. Starts – and opportunities – like this come around quite rarely.

Suspect you've got the main culprit on ignore.

I guess it also depends whether McKenna varies the formation. A playmaking/attacking midfielder would be interesting but rare species at Championship price points. Agree about Taylor and he seems to be getting closer to more starts. We are a bit light on the left and very dependent on Davis.

I think we now know enough about the Championship, as it is now, that the club has to take the opportunity to make a further step in squad quality. It may not be enough to secure promotion but it is necessary to maintain momentum and to stay competitive in the top few in the league.

I’d like to rant and rave a bit, as that feels like 2 points needlessly thrown away. I’ll do rational in the morning, but right now it’s about the emotion.

It was very frustrating but not sure "thrown away" is quite accurate. We blocked a shot, it ricocheted to someone who'd never scored before and he stuck it top bins from 20 yards. I'm not sure how we could have stopped that from happening really. Frustrating we didn't execute better in the final third but it's not like we gifted them the equaliser.

"the club has to take the opportunity to make a further step in squad quality."

At least we can now be confident that the club has the know-how, desire & determination to make it happen if it's at all possible - and thankfully, that's a very far cry from the ME years.

Interesting to hear on SkySports that for the postponed game Ashton was in the US meeting with the owners.

You'd have to imagine that was a planning meeting for the January window. Wouldn't you?

We had several chances to clear our lines but couldn’t cope with what they do best. Given that we’ve had shutouts for whole halves this season, I was pretty frustrated we couldn’t last 5 mins. But I also expected it, as it was that type of game. It was a good finish though. No doubt about that. Both their goals were good, the first especially was very well worked and finished with quality.

Tonight's result leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth, but I imagine that's how the Brum fans were feeling on Saturday. Would have been lovely to be 12 points clear of second, but it's still a healthy gap.

Bounce back on Saturday, get everyone over the bug during the international break and just keep moving forwards. Nothing to panic about.

....and for the fisrt time in many years.... a club that is probably attractive to many players particularly those looking for a career reboot (like many of our current squad!)

If we want to sail up auto we need to be scratching our heads a bit.

If we don't mind meandering, then it's fine and happy days.

Ah, I didn't know of the meeting - and am very happy to imagine that! (albeit I'd guess it was just one of several other items on the agenda).
