I think we all agree that one of the key areas to focus on ahead of next season is the defence. The opportunity to outscore opponents to get us out of jail will be far more restricted next season, so we need to reduce the "avoidable" goals we gave away, such as the 2 injury time goals against Cardiff etc.

My question is how best to strengthen - I think we need at least one prem quality central defender and ideally a skilled right back, better coverage in holding midfield for Luongo, where I think the lack of his pace will get found out more.

Do we go for an experienced (older) player together with a couple of younger ones with ability to quickly develop - while not throwing out the balance of the team.

I am very interested to see how KM looks to strengthen, and the type of player he goes in for . . .

Although we had the second best defensive record away from home last season, so we've shown we can actually defend pretty well in games where our opponents are likely to come at us a bit more. At home we were leaky but that was largely down to our approach of almost all out attack and planning to outscore the opposition. I imagine we'll temper that slightly next season. We need a CM with the legs to get back and track midfield runners, and agree that a CB with some Prem experience and a RB would be good additions too. I think generally our approach to next season needs to be tweaks and adding a bit of quality rather than wholesale change.

not sure it's just new personnel needed, which we will need a few bodies in of course, i think current group could be moulded into a good Championship defence, it's the way we play that leaves us open.

Our 2 centre halfs are very much left to defend 1v1, win their duels, that's where we will need more physicality as well as good 1v1 defenders.

Which reminds me - we are going to have to adapt to VAR pretty quickly (if it stays) to avoid giving silly pens away (especially defending corners/long throws), on the plus side I am hoping that we get more calls in our favour at the other end - it feels we had very little go for us last season in the opposition box.

Lucky Ipswich?

I do worry about us getting exposed at LB with Leif bombing on. Maybe a more defensive minded LB who can play away at Man City and give Davis a breather. I don't want to suggest Leif could then play a more forward role and having an overload down the left rather than the right, as I'll be shot down in flames by people who know better than me, but a bit of variety in the way we set ourselves up might be a good idea, whilst still maintaining the philosophy. This season we'll have opposition analysts pouring over us like we've been doing them.
