We might do better in Premier League than some think. 18:48 - May 30 with 2799 viewswhymark4lazio0

League One 2022/23- 98 points
Championship 2023/24 - 96 points

We did nearly as well in the Championship as we did in League One with essentially the same squad (although have to concede Omari, a fit Axel and Jeremy made a huge contribution). Is it possible with the help of a few signings we can improve again and have a real go at the Premier League?

Reasons to be optimistic

1. We've got Kieran McKenna
2. Nearly 20% fewer games in the PL than EFL. More time for KM to analyse and coach
3. We tweaked our playing style to deal with the Championship. KM is sure to have a strategy for the PL.
4. Players can improve further. Continuous small improvements are part of our process. Even senior players are improving.
5. Record over the last 2 seasons suggests we will recruit well in terms of players that will make an instant impact and will not upset the team spirit.
6. Our team is remarkably consistent. We only lost 6 times last season and we only lost by more than one goal twice (WBA & Leeds away 2-0 and 4-0).
7. This team never knows when it's beaten- more points from losing positions than any other team in Europe. Bounce back from every defeat.
8. We will attract ambitious young players due to the reputation we've established over the last two seasons.
9. We do better against teams that play good attacking football than teams that play a low block. Most teams in the PL are attacking.
10. The atmosphere at Portman Road (and amongst our travelling fans) will be euphoric and might be worth an extra 10 points in our first season back in the PL

I'm sure KMc would love to finish above Chelsea etc

Far fewer midweek games too, unless we go on a league cup run.

Our home support in particular can be massive for us. There is no doubt we have had some of the best atmospheres ever at Portman rd, and if we continue with the 'if we concede, we shall sing louder' mantra, then we can't go too far wrong.

Feels like the penny has dropped now and everyone in the ground realise that if we get the entire ground going, then Portman rd can be a force to be reckoned with.

And let’s not forget that KM has actually coached at a very high level in the prem. he really isn’t going into this green like many other managers do. He absolutely knows what to expect.

I’ll miss the midweek games and in some ways it’s a disadvantage considering we are unbeaten on a weekday with McKenna!

Burnley picked up 101pts in the Championship in 2022-23, playing excellent football under Kompany. He is still well enough thought of to have been given the Bayern Munich job. They've just been relegated comfortably. If we are going to do much better than them, we are going to need considerably better players than we currently have. Identifying them, affording them & persuading them to come to Town is going to be quite a task, especially as McKenna has recruited so far largely from Britain.

One of the bigger issues with Kompany was that, as I understand it, he was very rigid about the style of play. He used the same system he did in the Championship that he did in the Premier League and it just didn't work.

I think we've already shown we're adaptable, we don't always play the same way. We obviously need to strengthen but I'm quietly confident we won't go straight back down.

I'm not saying we're doomed to relegation but yes, McKenna is going to need better players and/or to adopt a different style of play. Note there was criticism of the rigidity of his style of play after Leeds thumped us at Elland Road (and some criticism after they also put 4 past us at PR).

They also signed too many new players. It's a fine balance, need to keep the cohesion and spirit of the current team but supplement it with some better players (with the right characters) too. We don't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I disagree. Firstly, our points total was within five points of Burnley while competing with three clubs far stronger than those Burnley were up against.

Secondly, we have a way of playing and a flexibility to us (see defence away from home against at PR for example) that will help in the PL.

Thirdly, because some of our players have gone through the divisions with us doesn’t mean they are not good players. A lot of them are

Lastly, ‘we are going to need considerably better players’ suggests a clear out and replace strategy. Do that and we will be relegated by a country mile whoever we bring in.

Yes, we will need additions. We have players who will be moving on and loanees to sign or replace so natural churn will happen. The trick is to replace those with better and strengthen in one or two areas. But keep the body and soul of this team together.

They deserve the opportunity and I believe a lot of them have the desire, professionalism and ability to step up.

One thing that makes me confident, is our ability to score lots of goals from lots of different game situations. We're no one trick pony, and if teams try to shut down one avenue, then we'll find another.

Clearly, we won't be scoring nearly as many as the last 2 seasons, but a lot of promoted teams have struggled to score enough, and without goals you're in trouble.

I'll be amazed if we don't play a more conservative game next season, as the space we left last season will be ruthlessly punished in the Premier league, but we can hopefully get the balance right and still have plenty of goal threat.

Yes, I've just checked & Burnley signed 16 new players last summer!
Everyone will have their own view as to where Town need strengthening, but I'm hoping we don't sign umpteen new players - just some who are better than what we have, plus some with PL experience. I would also expect some younger players with potential to improve.

It’s a massive step up, but you make some valid points. You certainly feel that our home form is going to be crucial, we will be confident having had such strong results at PR over the past 2 seasons and that will be massive.

Can we win 10 games next season? That’s about where we’ll need to be. Only 1 side in the past 12 (I think) years has won 10 and gone down, that was Cardiff in about 2016, they won 10 but only drew 4. The 2 sides above them only won 9. It’s going to be tough, no doubt about that, but it’s not impossible. The fact is it’s not the games against City / Arsenal / Liverpool that will dictate our season, it’s picking up wins against the bottom half that will do it.

We will do very well to stay up. Even if we do sign a bunch of great new players we have seen it takes some games to integrate into our system especially up front, and I don’t think we can rely on out scoring most teams anymore. But I think there is a good chance there will be 3 teams worse than us; if we can pick up home wins and away points against Fulham Bournemouth Leicester Ston Everton Forest and Palace and the odd bonuses against the big teams we should get to 35. Hopefully.

Worries me a bit that some think we’ll continue this great winning run, having unbeaten streaks etc…

Have you not seen the PL on TV?!the speed they play at, the tempo.

Let’s aim/hope for 4th from bottom before anything else shall we

Lots of valid points and I love your optimism, but I really think we need to set our expectations accordingly. Who knows, we might exceed those expectations as we did for so many people's expectations this season, mine included. But it'll be a huge ask to do anything other than just survive in this first season.

Still, your 6th point is the one that I'm most confident on. We won't win anywhere near as many matches as we've become accustomed to, but when we've had 'bad' runs and not played well over the last couple of seasons we have at least salvaged draws and been hard to beat, which could be crucial next season.
