But if a professional plays in a charity game and gets injured, what’s the deal there?
Just off the back of SM playing yesterday (great cause etc etc) but wonder if as a professional you need to get permission to play in a charity game, take out your own insurances etc.

It's all about getting insurance cover or not.
So would Sarmiento have been insured for a kick about at Goals last week? Few players have done that at diffierent clubs over the last few years, wonder whether they get permission etc. For that.

Ray Crawford tells a tale of getting injured in a testamonial and knowing how cross Sir Alf would be as he wasn't supposed to be playing.
Surely the answer would be that (unless it was obvious) you'd lie and pretend it happened at another time. Like when you hurt yourself doing a ridiculous goal celebration and then mysteriously tweak something a few minutes later.

Unless you pass out in said celebrations….

The iconic photo of George Best in an Ipswich shirt from Bobby Robson's testimonial. He didn't have a club at the time. I think Ipswich actually signed him for 1 match just for insurance purposes.
Played in a football tournament some years ago and Michael Crowe (the ex Ipswich goalkeeper) wasn’t allowed due to his contract and insurance to play in goal for us, or another team.
So he played upfront!!

I seem to remember Andy Goram getting fined by Rangers for playing cricket against the Australians
In The Swan pub in Rayne (near Braintree), there is a scorecard from the late 1960s when the village cricket team played West Ham. Quite a few famous footballing names on there, inc Bobby Moore.

Interesting question. I was chatting to a young (non-ITFC) pro keeper at a 6 a side game a year or so ago. He was watching his mates play and said he'd be in serious trouble if he'd joined in the game and his club found out.
It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
