Since Ashton arrived.. 14:34 - Jun 9 with 5657 viewswhymark4lazio0

...we've been astonishingly successful in the transfer market. All of these (from memory- please correct) successful signings/loans have come into the club since Ashton took over in July 2021

Václav Hladký
Christian Walton
Axel Tuanzebe
Harry Clarke
Cameron Burgess
George Edmundson
Leif Davis
Sam Morsy
Massimo Loungo
Jack Taylor
Dominic Ball
Lewis Travis
Marcus Harness
Omari Huthcinson
Jeremy Sarmiento
Nathan Broadhead
Conor Chaplin
George Hirst
Ali Al Hamadi
Kieffer Moore

The common factor- virtually all of them were unexposed or underrated (exceptions Omari, Jack, Ali and Kieffer).

Obviously it's going to be more challenging to pick up unexposed and/or underrated players to play in the Premier League but, based on the above track record, I wouldn't bet against it.

Conclusion: I think it's almost impossible to guess who we might sign and I expect we'll make signings that seem surprising and/or underwhelming but the data suggests that Ashton and McKenna know etc.

Feel like astonishing is a bit much. We have almost as many failures as successes.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

These from memory: I think these would be in the underwhelming bin ( from just under par to shocking) in the Ashton files.

Barry
Fraser
Pigott
Coulsen
Penney
Edwards
Harper
Camara
Bakinson
Thompson
Ahadme
Tom Carroll

In the good list: where's Wes. Freddie needs to be there for the first season. And Greg Leigh as he did nothing wrong and we felt sorry for him as he got no game time.

I thought Coulson was excellent and a shame he got injured. But then we got Leif . .

A couple of those players had bad injuries which hindered their progress.

I do think that a lot of those players were ok in relation to when we signed them but have been badly found out due to the sheer pace at which the club has developed.

Never thought he was excellent. Didn't he arrive not fit and he never really got fit ..? And don't think we missed him. For me, he's a miss, not a hit.

He did get fit and made a handful of games where he really was good, imho.

We can agree to disagree on that one. Doesn’t matter now anyway.

Only 2 real costly misses are Camara & Harper which probably add up less than £1m total

You'll never have a 100% hit rate, but you would have burned £1m to get the players we actually did that hit it off.

I left out Wes because I thought he came just before Ashton joined (might be wrong). I meant to include Freddie just forgot to list him. Agree about Greg.

IMHO the pluses far, far outweigh the negatives. Thanks for listing the underwhelming signings. Do you think the overall success rate is astonishing?

One point to consider, all (I think) the underwhelming signings were made early in the Ashton regime when had a large clear out and needed to make a lot of signings. Since then (under Ashton and McKenna) we've had very few misses.

I don't think Kyle Edwards was a miss either. In the L1 promotion campaign he was very useful in coming off the bench and changed quite a few games particularly towards the end of the season.

I'd have been happy to keep him for the Championship campaign but it was obviously Sarminento & Hutchinson were an upgrade in the end.

I think Macauley Bonne should be on one of those lists.

Left him out (like Wes Burns) as he came in June 2021 and Ashton appointed July 1st 2021 (as per transfermarkt.co.uk). Might be wrong to do that- perhaps Ashton had some input before his official appointment. Obvs Burns a major success and I'd judge Macauley a partial success.

He started officially on June 1, and this interview is from then.

He makes it pretty clear in the interview that he'd already started work, unofficially. (Was he still working for Bristol C. through May, in theory?)

Thanks for that. Good to revisit that time and Ashton gets credit for Burns and Bonne as well! His record is astonishing.

Without Ashton we wouldn't be where we are now.

His contribution to our resurrection is extraordinary.

Lest we forget he was the one who targeted and recruited McKenna.

And just like with Kieran, Town and Ashton were made for each other.

Completely agree. Edwards didn't live up to his initial "oh my god we've got a superstar player here" but definitely a hit for me. Was an important player who made very important contributions to our L1 success.

Al Hamadi was one of the most sought after lower league talents. On everyone's radar.

Hutchinson will have been sought after, even if fans hadn't heard of him.

I'm not dure that Bakinson or Thompson should be in there, they both did a job in the short-term helping McK implement a style he wanted before we brought in better players the following season.

Fraser, Pigott and Evans are big, expensive failures. All three signed without enough diligence or thought as to how they would play.

The other two big failures are ones of omission, we've failed to land a second striker in each of the last two Summers despite it being a clear priority both times.

Ashton has done a good job overall, and the club is in a pretty good place at the moment but it would be nice if we could collectively be a little less one-eyed about it.

Not to be critical as I think Ashton has had a fair pot of money to play around with - a pot most owners/CEO's would like to have at hand, but most of the players signed over his tenure have played their part than not.

The biggest success Ashton has got right was recruiting McKenna though. It's obvious we wouldn't be where we are now without McKenna and the majority of those players on the success list like Morsy, Luongo and Chaplin for example probably wouldn't be at the level they've been for us without him.

There have been some which haven't worked out which is part of football though - Pigott was an expensive miss.

Because we've done so well, every signing is seen as a success unless they have been an utter failure - players like Greg Leigh, Dom Ball, Lee Evans, Kyle Edwards, George Edmundson I'd put in that camp of being signings that haven't worked out and in some cases being expensive.

There have been some fantastic signings - some were made possible because we had silly money to spend in L1 and could attract players (Morsy, Chaplin, Broadhead), others happened because they were fantastic pieces of Talent ID that we got ahead of other clubs who should have been in for them (Davis, Hirst, Burns, Luongo), some have been signings that would have been total flops without a change of manager but now have been transformed by KMc [our best signing] (Burgess, Hladky).

I'd be fascinated to know who was involved and how we came up with the process which landed us McKenna. He was clearly targeted, rather than just seeming like a good punt, instead of the usual Holloway/Pardew/Warnock suspects.
