but I didnt think the England game was all that bad, for a 0 - 0 draw*. There was much more energy than against the Danes, it was fairly end-to-end stuff at times, there were decent attempts on goal.

Granted, it's nothing like watching the current incarnation of Ipswich Town play. But we've been spoilt by some rather excellent football over the last couple of years.

Also, once again England have been favoured by the draw, which should see them well into the competition before facing anyone too ferocious.

* At the end of the group stage of a tournament, where we really only had to not lose.

Morning Guffers

It was pretty grim - one shot on target 1st half, and a desperately cautious line-up against a team who were playing for a draw and who offered very little.

I acknowledge that Kane is unfit - but a squad with the absolute riches of Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Palmer, Mainoo, Rice and Gordon should be offering a lot more in a group consisting of a hugely cautious Danish side, and two teams in Slovenia and Serbia who were playing for 3rd place from the outset.

It was better than Denmark, but the Danish performance was reminscent of the last days of Lambert.

It was a hard watch.
England played a cancellation game which stops the opponents doing anything but stops England from doing anything as well.
Southgate instructions to players.....
"Don't let Slovenia get hold of the ball because the Slovenian Galacticos will tear us apart."

Given your capacity to learn, assimilate and disseminate often long and complex issues, it just proves your patience and open minded nature.

I on the other hand thought it more turgid rubbish, however, we should praise our opponents for making it tough, especially their player (if I heard correct) who is a lower EFL journeyman who has signed for Swindon.

Makes me more confident Town can thrive next season.

See you Saturday

I thought it was terrible to be fair , sorry Guthers but when you consider the below it wasn’t all that bad I guess -

No patterns of play
No left back
Players playing out of position
Striker seemingly unfit
New CB pairing
Champions League winner running in mud
Stubborn manager

Indeed. The Denmark game was particularly awful (from an English perspective), so it's a very low bar. And part of the entertainment came from Slovenia putting up a fight for some of the game.

But really, until we get a manager with the instincts to use all of those attacking players (and the ability to forge an efficient unit in the very limited time allowed to international coaches), then the talent is going to be wasted.

At least last night was a little bit better and it didn't feel abysmally dull to watch.

Given your name I'm assuming you took at least some pleasure from the Danes playing well though?

It was marginally better than Denmark and Serbia, but lets be honest the bar is set so low.

As soon as we run into a team that has any sort of quality we will get beaten playing like this.

Our best performance of the tournament was the first half hour against Serbia. For some reason, it's gone downhill since then.

It was the best we've played since the first 30 mins against Serbia but that's not saying much!
Mainoo, Palmer and Gordon all made an impact when they came on so can hopefully start the next match

We didn't. Slovenia did that. Anti football but understandable from them. I could live with that performance in that scenario had it not been for the last 3-4 performances. You get games like last night when teams just put up the blockers. But we've been ineffective as an attacking force for several games so there is a pattern.

Palmer, Gordon and Mainoo were all improvements when they came on which. Is a positive but they did have fresh legs. I think Mainoo has to start. At least one or both Gordon or Palmer should also be starting.

I thought second half it improved. The other lot just sat back and defended deep. We seem to struggle badly now at breaking that down. Iceland game onwards we look like we lack ideas.

When we play a Spain etc I think we will get more chances as they won't be sitting back so much.

I don't believe in this booing of the players. It took a lot of years to get a team that enjoyed playing for England again. That can soon be destroyed.

I’m with you if you took that second half in isolation - you’d think England on 09:35 - Jun 26 with 2038 viewsunstableblue

We’re performing pretty well

The opposition were very deep

In the first half I think sadly it was a confidence and mental issue… I think the media and public pressure has got to the players

I think start Mainoo and Palmer and go against a team who aren’t going to sit deep and we may do a lot better

I'd say it was acceptable up to the edge of their box. We didn't sit off them for longish periods like we did against the Danes, and we didn't look so clunky in the middle. But we had absolutely no courage when it came to rolling the dice around the edge of their penalty box. Too scared to lose the ball probably, the old English disease.

The immensely frustrating thing is that in Foden, Bellingham and Saka plus a couple coming on we've got the players to unlock even a massed defence like that. Kane's so far off in terms of overall contribution that he's a liability, a missing player, but the big problem is mental and the choice (if that's what is was) to be cautious in the group stages has wasted the opportunity to build courage and momentum. Sh!t management as far as I'm concerned.

It was awful.

Still Dutch on Sunday and home, Southgate finished in international management but coming to a league club soon, feel bad already for whoever that league club is.

Given that we had qualified I had hope that we'd play without any pressure on us and would be a bit more free-flowing. Only consolation is that there are a few sides out there underperforming but that doesn't stop us going home in the next round.

Still pinning my hopes that a fit LB will make a difference but I'm sure I'll be disappointed.

Well it could be argued they did enough to win the group and advance and that is sufficient, for now. Obviously a step up needed now as they are about to come up against tougher opposition.

I think the gripes become more justified when you take all three performances as a whole. Two goals scored in three games vs that standard of opponent, doesn't smack of quality attacking football does it?

I think we'll find it easier and we'll be better in the knockouts assuming we face teams who are more adventurous than Slovenia. However, the last two games have reminded me of the Iceland match under Roy Hodgson, lots of possession around the box without having the guile to find a way through a massed defence.

I don't understand though, we faced teams in League One that parked the bus and we had players who could work out after a while how to break through, we have the best Player in the PL and the best player in La Liga (Europe) and we still struggle to break down teams.

They all look completely lost, including Southgate, the problem he has is he has moved away from when he first came in i.e playing form players in their positions, to having an embarrassment of riches and trying to play them all out of position just to accomodate them, You can see his confusion is affecting the performances on the pitch.

It was much better than the Denmark match, but still was a waste of 2 hours when I have much more useful things I could be doing in those 2 hours.
We can at least have some peace of mind until Sunday, then we will either be out and Southgate will be gone, or we will have won and had some improvement that we can build on.
