I can't know which other clubs were genuinely 'in' or him, or what terms West Ham offered. But on the face of it, this does seem like a bit of a 'coup'. It may be that Town (feeling free right now to put their money where their mouth/assessment of the data is) offered a big old wage, given that there's no transfer fee. And maybe that was what swung it. But prising him away from a mid-table (and most recently top half) Premier League club that he's been at since he was a nipper, when they'd offered him a new five-year deal and are not known to be especially strapped for cash is a real achievement. We've got Kieran McKenna, he knows exactly what we need. We've got Mark Ashton, he toddles off to the shops with the list, and comes back with his bag for life pretty full. A great start. (subject to, yknow, him actually joining us!) | |
