any decent routes to austria 18:41 - Jul 1 with 1988 viewsharveybell05

really like the prospect of going out to austria but given it is right next to the alps, austria is incredibly expensive to get to. has anyone got any decent alternate routes?

Villach is very near Ljubliana, Slovenia. Ryanair fly to Klagenfurt, a short distance by train fm Villach. Also, train fm Vienna, Graz, Salzburg or Munich are reasonable options, but take 2-5 hours.

Fly to somewhere like Prague and catch a Flixbus to Villach (8ish hours, £30 to £50).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Sleeper train from Cologne to Vienna. 5 hours to Cologne from London, sleep the rest of the journey away. It's rather good, although more expensive than flying. But also far lower emissions.

Ferry to Holland, down to Baden Baden. B500 south will get you to Konstance and Switzerland.

Grossglockner, Furhker and on to Austria and onto the Tyrol. Stelvio (avoid weekend) into Italy before enjoying the Dolomites. From there just a stones throw to Villach.

5 days to enjoy it, 3 days if you're in a rush.

If embarking on the train, check out:

Suggestion is to go London to Munich day 1 then overnight to Villach the following morning.

I drove to Austria a few years back via the Eurotunnel. Took a day and half with a stop over in Germany. Get a few people in the car, and it will be much cheaper than flying.

Not a Mummy. Don't have short arms.

He’s superb. The only go to resource you need for rail travel across Europe (and beyond). I’ve done the Cologne - Vienna route before and it suited us, but yes there are options. Depends on timings and where you want to go to.

It is an exceptional fount of knowledge.

It does appear there are a real plethora of routes to take if it's what you fancy. Cross Alps through Switzerland, sleepers. Maybe you don't want to book Eurostar, get the ferry from Harwich.

13 hours from Hook of Holland, but that divides nicely into 2 x half days, with overnight beer breaks in Germany there & back...

The prospect of going out to Austria in the semi-final doesn't bear thinking about. Plus there are no guarantees we can navigate past Switzerland.

I looked at flights in & out of Klagenfurt last night but couldn't get any to work as it's not a daily route by the look of things (happy to proven wrong here).

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.
