Congrats to Southgate. We're in the semi's. That's deep ( for a semi) and if we go out to Holland - no disgrace and looks pretty reasonable and adds to his record as a "successful" England manager..... but..... I truly think he's a terrible coach and we've got this far not because of him, but despite him.
Is that being harsh? There's been non-stop criticism from media and the fans of him and that doesn't help - but after 8 years as England boss surely we should see some cohesion and style and identity. The only identity I see is ponderous and no-risk. It just relys on one of our players showing a bit of class to get us out of jail or over the line.
If this is tournament-style football then I'm not a fan. I don't think it's necessarily low-risk as we 9/10 would have been eliminated against Slovakia without Bellinghams last gasp equaliser and had to rely on Saka's late equaliser and a penalty shoot-out to get us through last night. I'm trying to offer praise to Southgate and give him credit - but I can't help think he's just a lucky sod who's nowhere good enough to get more out of this team.

Don't worry about it, he'll be gone after the tournament.

9 times out of 10 one of Kanes chances would've gone in v Slovakia and Foden would've stayed on side.

Where does he go though? I can’t understand why any club would take him. The fact he was heavily linked with the United job is ridiculous.

Where does he go? Seeing out the rest of his working life as a pundit ( as the most or second most successful England manager ever).
He'd be crazy to go back to club football. He'd be found out pretty quickly and his legacy will be tarnished.

Get so far up the pitch, ignore attacking runs in order to be sure of retaining possession.
How many times do you make an ignored attacking run before you stop making them?

Or do we credit the opposition for having a plan to try to beat us?

One aspect last night was playing it around at the back, like us, but instead of Morsy swivelling to play to a colleague it goes back to Pickford who launches it up to no-one in particular, much the same way Hart used to.

McKenna took a side cobbled together in L1 to EPL in 2 seasons and a bit, invoking a style of play and tactics that are thrilling to watch.
Southgate has the pick of England's best but has no discernable style other than a McCarthy like one... But, he's reached his 3rd SF, so it has worked...

It’s impressive to go deep with a semi.
