You've got to stop worrying about the fees. We're signing players who, in the worst case scenario, can be sold on to cover losses. That's unlike 2002 when we were forced to pay off most of our higher earners to terminate their contracts i.e. Finidi. [Post edited 12 Jul 2024 13:14]

IF we went down, all our players values go down with us. Unless he is an absolute shinning star, then I don't see how we get £27M + his wages back. Like I say, I totally trust our board and backroom staff, but these fees are alien to me as an Ipswich Town supporter. I hope we get a few more freebees in just to balance the books a little. |  |

Greaves was quoted at £22m in that double deal but is now being reported as a fee of £15m.
If we've then consequently actually bid £27m, we would only have upped our offer on both by £2m.

I think that is the whole point of the double deal. That we have a common agreement on what the two of them are worth in aggregate, but each party retains the flexibility to allocate how we see fit. I have no idea, but we may want to value JG lower and JP higher because we think that in any sale we are likely to make more profit on the attacker, Hull definitely want the JP number to be lower due to the sell on.

You can’t outbid as it’s a matched bud offer - they just need to match the highest bid to allow them the chance to offer terms to Philogene so it won’t affect the asking price, only way that can happen is if some one who previously offered a certain amount of money have increased it which wouldn’t seem likely as Hull accepted multiple bids meaning an agreed amount was reached. Villa matched it to allow them to speak to Philogene that’s it - it’s up to him where he wants to go based on terms and his playing time | | | |

I agree, but Foden and Grealish are worth more. Mo Salah is still being quoted at £120M, so not sure what being English has to do with it, unless you are only selling to PL clubs. | |

Agreed. Pretty much sorts our front line out and with the majority of pre season to bed them in. We can concentrate on getting the right keeper and central midfielder in.

What are you basing your opinion on out of interest?
Per 90' last season, Philogene had more successful dribbles than Omari, a higher success rate, was dispossessed less and won more fouls. He won more tackles and duels, as well as winning a higher percentage of both. His passing accuracy was better, from long to short, and he created more chances per minute on the field. Philogene scored 0.38 goals per 90'. Omari scored 0.41 goals per 90'. Their 'expected goals' from post-shot analysis is the same.
Their performances were very similar in truth, with Philogene shading it on a minute-per-minute basis and the clear winner overall, given his consistency over a longer period of time. Omari was excelling towards the end and I know would be first choice of almost all of us, if we were forced to choose in a parallel universe, but Philogene deserved to finish much higher in the player rating tables and had a great season himself (4th or 5th best overall according to the data crunching specialists - McKenna loves his data). | | | |

There's always that risk regardless of who we're signing. But when you're buying players who are young, British, so highly thought of and have multiple other premier league clubs sniffing around them it certainly de-risks the ability to move these players on should we need to. I can't see a world where their future PL careers are all written off even if we completely flop next season (which we and they wont).
We might not recoup every penny on all of them, but it probably only takes one of Hutchinson / Philogene / Greaves etc to have a promising season for their value to double. An average season and it probably holds. Davis is also a good season away from being worth £30m, and a bad one away from still being worth a lot more than we paid.
I think its the best strategy that gives us the best chance of survival, but also the best opportunity to manage the finances with their likely resale value if we were to go down. |  | | |
