Gutted about Philogene 08:28 - Jul 13 with 5440 viewsNutkins_Return

Really think he might be a £50-60 million player in 12 months. really liked the look of our attack with him. Like the missing piece of the jigsaw. It really looked like we had pulled off a special signing and beaten genuine prem opposition for him. Ashton and co I think had worked very hard on that.

Zero blame on club for not landing him and we'll have a few of those I'm sure. Don't even blame Philogene as Villa are selling Diaby and he will have been told he's coming to pay at the slot is open now and he will have champions league football.

Sammie S is an ok signing but I really hope we can find a Philogene level one or we just go and get Ben Sheaf now with the money at least for CM.

Sheaf would be great, but we also need some PL experience. Plenty have been released, so I would be looking there for squad players and experience.

Have Villa definitely landed him now ? I have only seen 'reportedly' and 'poised to sign' so far. It ain't over till the Mark Ashton counter signs...

Yesterdays news from Fabrizio Romano, local Hull journo and others basically confirmed it’s happening but Nixon doesn’t reckon it’s over yet…

I think you’re misreading that?

Isn’t he saying.. “I was saying (past tense) Philogene wasn’t over because Villa would come in to replace Diaby… and now they have.”

A bit of a hindsight / ‘told you so’ tweet from him.

It's an interesting comment.

Previously it had been reported that Villa were getting JP for £18m minus their 30% sell-on.

If we were in for him as part of a £40m double deal, and we've now signed Greaves for £15m, perhaps that could mean that we're now valuing JP at £25m, and that Villa will now have to match that fee to stay in the running?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

There seems to be a bit of talk that his personal terms were pre-agreed, within what sounds like the most hideously convoluted deal I've ever heard of, and therefore automatically accepted by Villa exercising matching rights. Given he'd agreed them here of his own volition, perhaps doesn't signify that he's actually chosen them until confirmation he's gone for that rumoured medical.

Didn't Villa state that the decision would be with the player though?

I suspect this is just a rouse by Villa to ensure Hull set the valuation of Philogene at the correct level, I still don't think this is done with yet.

Oh.

The pre-agreed personal terms does seem odd. Surely we’d be offering more than whatever Villa proposed when he left as a decent youth prospect last season.

A hull supporting friend is definitely far more upset about losing Greaves than Philogene.

To be honest a lot of the comments I've seen on social media from Hull fans seem to be uncertain as to whether Philogene can make the step up

I was excited about the potential double signing but get the feeling we've got the better of the 2.

We'll move on and see who else comes in through the door. Don't think.Szmodics is a Philogene alternative though

Phil have we turned to Sammie post Philogene or do you think it would be happening anyway? £6m is certainly a fair price so perhaps we were always going to go in for him? Hope so as certainly don't see it as a like for like or nearly as good as Philogene.

I do think Greaves is good business but Philogene will go on to be worth more and I'd be so excited about our forward line with him.

Yep, quality player. So near yet so far, and can’t really blame him going to Villa as I do think he’ll get his chance there as well. Wouldn’t surprise me if he puts himself in that group with the likes of Eze & Gordon as England options over the coming few years, he’s that good.

Still we’ve made 4 excellent signings so far, can’t win them all I guess. Hopefully a few more to come too.

The decoupling of the Philogene and Greaves deals, with the announcement of the latter, would suggest to me that the former is not coming here now.

I read it that the end of the story is that diaby moves which is why philogene chose villa as he will get 1st team football

Either way, i now feel that he might come with more problems than it is worth. We need cohesion this season

I'm not a hindsight merchant but I was never overly excited by this signing. Not the player. He's a huge talent. But more the noise around the signing.
Whilst I suspect we may have been close (who knows, we may still be), it had all the hallmarks of this horrible prem circus that seems to envelope nearly every link.
Whilst I'm genuinely excited about next season, the circus surrounding the prem just reminds me why I dislike it so much.
That said, if our ambition was to be there, who cares what I think. You just have to take it. Warts and all.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

I'm not saying he is.

But I am saying that we should not take pundits, rumour merchants and gossipers as the fount of all knowledge. Even decent journalists like Phil get it a bit wrong once in a while.

Furthermore, and to illustrate my point, when I went to the BBC transfers page to see if there had been any developments I was wondering if the proposed Onana deal might have any bearing (it very probably doesn't) and found these snippets tagged onto the end of teh article:

'They are also expected to complete the return of Jaden Philogene in the coming days after the Hull winger flew back from the Tigers' training camp in Turkey on Friday.'

and

'Villa included a matching option in his move last September and snatched him from Ipswich, who had agreed an £18m deal with Hull.' How can you snatch something from someone when they are not holding it in the first place ? Vapid hubris, and on the BBC!

Philogene is good player, but some people seem to talking like he's the next Messi, based on last season he's no Summerville.

To be fair I can only base my opinion on watching him last season in the Town home and away games. He didn't cause any issues during the home game, although Hull as a team wasn't anything special

In the away game, a game Hull really needed to win, again I didn't think he gave as any major problems, although did play better than in the home game. Compared with Hutchinson's performance it was night and day.

Carvalho was Hull's best player in that game and when Delap came on his direct running caused us a lot of problems. But in a game Hull needed the win Philogene didn't do anything amazing.

However I would like to see Philogene at Town as KM will make him a better player, but I think we can find another with just the same potential

No ody is talking about him like Messi. I've seen him quite a few times and he's a brilliant talent. Over the whole season he probably had more impact than Omari for them as he was ahead in development and was good from day 1. They are on similar trajectories and to have both would have been great.

For me it was just a great fit and he would grow in value on and off the pitch. Nobody to blame really though. Just in demand and a hard one to get done.

I'd rather we got him also but I think Greaves was the more important signing and as a better chance of being that 50M players next year. We''ll just be in for a similar type player to billy jean so it's no drama.

Covered this on a different thread...personal terms weren't pre-agreed. There are 2 different clauses on the contract, a buy-back and matching rights...

Villa had the right to buy JP back for a pre-agreed fee of £15m (on pre-agreed personal terms) IF Hull were promoted to the Prem. They weren't, so can't activate that clause.

The matching rights clause means Hull have to inform Villa of any bids received and accepted for JP, and Villa then have 72 hours to match those bids. It's then down to JP (and his agent) to decide which is the best deal for him.

BUT Villa also have a 30% sell-on clause if JP moves clubs; new club, they get 30% of the transfer fee - if he goes back to Villa, Hull have to refund 30% of Villa's transfer fee.

You got it right with hideously convoluted, but that's the sea we're swimming in now...
