Germany are a powerhouse.. even in their average years they go deep in tournaments and that was a good enough team that year for Southgate (and England) to be given some respect
The win against Croatia is overlooked because they are t a powerhouse, but they had some stellar players in Modric, Rakitic etc.
I do feel this narrative is so embedded that Southgate would have to transport his team back in time and beat 1970s Brazil for people to accept his achievements. We are an effective tournament team, something we’ve always been envious of the likes of Germany & Italy |  | | |

It was a great win. Gareth's biggest for me, despite it coming in the L16. There was very little in it performance-wise from what I remember but it was us who found the moments - the reverse of the France loss really. Maybe unfairly I didn't think of Germany as a top team when we played them. Havertz and Werner had just been a bit rubbish in the PL, Muller was ancient, and they'd recently been knocked out in the WC group stages. I remember being so sure that we must beat them finally, and that if we didn't we probably never would. | | | |

Same thing happened in that game as well. Gave them too much respect until inevitably going a goal down. We then realise we need to attack and when we do we look good. Once we get the equaliser we revert back to the plan which hadn't worked for the previous 60+ minutes and concede again. So frustrating to watch. Why are we so scared to try and win? |  |

There's the usual suspects who it's no surprise in Germany, France, Italy and Spain, we should be in that group, then there's Russia, as the USSR, who were decent, Netherlands who are a much smaller nation than England but excel, then you have Czechoslovakia and Portugal, Greece who were shlt fwck knows how they did it and Denmark who did not even qualify.

If Southgate was a better coach I think we would have beaten Italy and we would have given Spain much more to think about.
Before Southgate, it’s been a combination of various issues - Long ball football played by players not as tactically intelligent as their European counterparts, managers not able to get the best from their side and players being too tired after playing too many matches.
Previously, English footballers were not as technical or as intelligent as the Spanish, Italians, Germans etc but I think that with the academy system we have caught up. It’s the English managers that seem to be lacking. |  | | |

The last 2 major tournaments, I really thought England could win it. We actually played fairly well, esepcially the 2020/21 one. We shopuld have really won that.
