Tax Rises are coming!!! 21:59 - Jul 30 with 9574 viewsmutters

Sounds like fun. Based on Labour sticking to its manifesto pledges of no increase in VAT, national insurance, or income tax increases, where will they raise enough cash to plug the "black hole"?

The money has to come from somewhere. Public services are significantly underfunded, we've really got 2 choices, either continue to underfund them and live with the consequences, or fund them appropriately. The latter will inevitably result in more tax, whether its private school fees, IHT, NI & income tax, corporation tax. Probably a combination of all of the above over time. Harsh reality but probably unavoidable.

Makes you wonder how close to total civil unrest we are. Some signs of extremists kicking off last couple of weeks. As a rule we are quite an obedient nation and we tend to go with whatever the politicians do. I wonder how much longer that will last.

Really don't understand why people have such a hard time with this. Services and infrastructure are on their knees, and in that environment the Tories cut National Insurance twice to try and by everyone's votes.

If we want services, and we want good roads, we have to pay for them, meanwhile, we have never paid as much tax as we do now, and the highest earners have never paid so little.

Someone will be paying more in tax.

Most will appreciate that money needs to come from somewhere to fix some of the major issues that we as a country face. However, it will depend on where they get the cash from. If they break their manifesto pledges, that is pretty spectacular this early on in a new parliament.

I’ve said iver and over again taxes will have to rise (DJR has also been consistent on this). It was inevitable, borrowing more would simply destroy what’s left of our fiscal credibility on the sovereign debt markets, as well as kicking the can down the road for future generations. I think probably a few like me know we need to pay more tax for better services and don’t begrudge that. It’s probably the perceived ‘dishonesty’ of the election campaign that no taxes would rise for working people. That was neither credible, or particularly honest.

The election was always Labour’s to lose, they could have been open and said better services will mean more tax. It must have been obvious to Labour as it was externally that taxes rises would be unavoidable. By not being more upfront this just plays into the ‘all politicians/parties are the same’ narrative.

If working people don't have it and the government doesn't have it, who has all the money? We know the answer but no government will admit it.

It’s all in the Norwegian wealth fund, after Equinor price gouged us heating our homes following the invasion of Ukraine!

If they do do it it's not perceived dishonesty, it will be complete dishonesty. Get elected on a manifesto and then backtrack straight away.

Your point is very very valid, they had enough of a lead to not have to take this path and should have been more transparent. It could be a rocky 5 years ahead if this is how they are starting off.

I have had years of tax rises under the Tories. Several years of high inflation but no change in tax thresholds has cost me a lot. Wine & beer tax changes, nonsensical but expensive.

Beneficiaries? People whose NI has reduced hugely. Excludes unwaged and pensioners.

The great Tory con was to screw pensioners whilst making them think they were being looked after.

Who has it? The Tory donors who benefited by £37bn from the utterly useless test / track / trace. And from the £10bns of dodgy, unusable PPE.

The tories biggest self deception, was the failure to connect low growth with inadequate public sector services.

What happens when there are no mental health services? The manual worker has time off and gets less productive. The manager manages badly. The kids need more help at school from their parents, who have less energy at work etc etc

What happens when your courts are broken? It takes 2 years to get a decision on that dispute, 2 years without 20ks worth of invoices, or with a knackered machine you cant afford to replace. etc etc

What happens when the police are underfunded? Theft doesnt get dealt with. The workman's tools arent replaced and he can do fewer good jobs in the same time. The money for them goes into the black market rather than the economy. People don't go out, people trust less etc

It all. ALL. Keys into economics. And they cant see that.

If you are paying a few quid more every month but things do actually improve a bit in terms of stuff like, NHS, housing, social care etc. then I think It's a fair trade-off.

The country is broken and it's going to cost money to arrest the slide, it's debatable whether we can actually fix it.

I'm not somebody who can easily afford higher taxes, but you have to be pretty naive not to accept they are required.

Saying they are not though, well then yes, that does kind of prove the point that actually most politicians are much the same regardless of team colours.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

My mum is a good example of wanting more and paying less. She is a well off younger pensioner in her late 60s with her own nice home and plentiful savings. She wants public services to increase and the local and county councils to repair roads quicker and stop closing libraries which she and an increasing number of people never use. On the other side of the coin she blasted the government when they announced the scrapping of fuel allowance for wealthier pensioners and believes her council tax should come down. She also believes young adults have never had it so easy where the opposite is true. She is really switched on when it comes to micro-economics but she does not understand macro-economics well at all. I find that hard to fathom.

It would be great if we set up systems that reward hard work and taking responsibility and we didn't carry freeloaders. What is clear is that we can't afford to allow hundreds of thousands of people in who are net takers.
It is a very fragile balance. Adding a private school tax might very well increase the number of parents who decide to send their children to state schools and create more pressure on resources, the same goes for demonizing people who use private healthcare. We should appreciate these people who pay towards services that they don't even use.
The other balance is not scaring off businesses and high net-worth individuals who are incredibly mobile. Lower taxes from rich people is better than no taxes from rich people.

You can only continue to slam the same tax payers and SME businesses with more raises for so long. Most are already struggling to cope with mass rises in energy and wage costs among other increase's.

Funny how they will somehow have to find a way to afford these further tax increases when the perceived answer from government is to simply ask for more.
