Despite having flown over 50+ times 12:32 - Aug 2 with 6255 viewshype313

Recently I've developed an irrational fear of flying, anyone else had similar or am I just being a berk?

Definitely the same, think it was when I’d had kids, possibly changes things. I’m actually back to ok with flying now. Have to say going through the edge of a named hurricane on the way back from Cuba didn’t help either- utterly petrified.

I had a similar thing with heights. There’s a place we went on honeymoon, you can float down a lazy river and at points climb up mini cliffs to jump back in, did so thinking nothing of it. Went back with the kids a few years later, rushed up to the same point and nearly sh%t myself, lifeguard was laughing at me - eventually managed to jump under duress from the kids.

The 'fear' isn't generally to do with flying but more to do with 'not' flying.

….a fear of heights.

As I’ve got older it’s developed into a bit of vertigo.

It never affected flying, but the last few times I’ve flown I’ve stopped gazing at the ground out of the window.

Flying in general is just a means to an end and anyone that says they enjoy it is lying!

I have one, but I've always hated it.

But as homer says, it's more to do with the fear I'll stop flying.

Same as me, especially after take off when the plane turns, I get terrible vertigo for a minute or two.

Think that's down to anxiety.

I also have a fear of heights, but someone once said it's not a fear of heights it's a fear of falling, which kina makes sense.

Fear of heights is acrophobia.
Vertigo is a different symptom, although it is sometimes aroused by being in a high place.

….or to be precise more of a fear of jumping!

I honestly get the urge to jump when I’m at any sort of height.

(I imagine that would please certain posters on here!)

Yeah had this around 08 in my mid to late twenties lasted a few years, I don’t love flying now but I didn’t enjoy that period of my life when I was flying. I wasn’t hysterical or anything but I didn’t enjoy the flights one bit but the flights we tended to go on at that point were 8 plus hour ones, so no short ones.

Didn’t do anything about it just got through it.

It’s strange how the human mind works and perceptions of things do change over time. You feel how you feel.

Flying? Always loved it and aircraft and I still do, even if long airline travel is a bit boring.

As others have said, not so much flying but heights. Was staying in Italy a few years back in the hills outside Luca and was ok driving up and down on a daily basis. Few years later was on holiday in Spain in a similar location and was so petrified couldn’t drive at all. Feel dizzy now when l watch the mountain stages of the Tour de France.

What changes inside to bring that about?

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

As I’ve got older I’ve developed some mild claustrophobia/anxiety. Weirdest example at the barbers I go to they put a hot towel on your face. I refuse that now as it freaks me out and I feel like I can’t breathe. And was at the theatre last year and just before the show started the lights went out and I had a mild panic attack and felt trapped. Assume this is all due to getting older.

Flying has never bothered me, largely due to the fact if something goes wrong there’s not a lot you can do about it.

I developed this exact same thing which was really painful as I need to travel a lot for work (3 or 4 flights a month)

I got vertigo on take off and occasionally once up in the air, I got past it by downloading a playlist of songs I loved or that calmed me and I always wear headphones on take off now and at times of turbulence. I find the distraction of having music in my ears really helps.

Yea, over water, and the fact you're above the clouds in a metal tin which gravity wants to put in the ground.

Truly impaired.

Love flying, and always have. Prefer smaller planes as you can feel the wind-waves. Mostly these days it's just a means-to-an-end in these enormous great monsters.

I also like sailing, which gives me similar pleasure.

I don't like roller-coaster fairground rides, tho', haha.

But, yes, things change - your senses deteriorate, and other conditions may take hold. If you don't like it, try not to do it.

I have a big issue with it that developed in my early 20s. Not scared of the plane crashing but more being a confined space. It’s basically a panic attack for the first 15mins of any flight and is dreadful to be honest. I now sit on my own, same seat pretty much every time, have to close the shutter if flying in economy even when they tell you not to on take off.

It never bothered me as a kid but when I lived abroad in my late 20's I used to hate flying home every three months or so and had that fear. A few years later I used to commute from Glasgow to London every Monday by air, returning home on Friday and I was flying so regularly in all sorts of weather that I lost the fear.

I have vertigo by proxy. Heights don't worry me at all but if I'm climbing a munro or near the edge of a cliff with my Mrs or my kids I come over in a panic that they will fall. It really freaks me out.

I wouldn't say its irrational. Its quite rational to me to be nervous about stepping onto a metal can to travel 40,000 ft above land at 500 mph across the Atlantic.

I hate flying, mine is more physical though. I've been a frequent flier and my ears / head / eyes sometimes really hurt from the pressure. Its a bit hit and miss but I've had nosebleeds in the past and agony I've never ever felt on terra firma, and I include breaking bones and ligaments. Really puts me off as when its bad its excruciating.

I don't think it is irrational.

I mean it's irrational to think you are going to crash each time you fly, but its not irrational for your brain and body to react like that when you are so far above firm ground in a tin can.
