I spent much of my working life in Norway. It's a fantastic place to chill and experience solitude and nature, but so effing expensive! While someone else was paying it was great. Once I had to pay out of my own pocket, not so.

Quite a few issues there at the moment.

Obviously they have been far shrewder than us with their Oil money, which has positioned the country (and it's people) as generally far wealthier than the majority of other countries.

Bit of a backlash going on - some big ethical questions being asked within the country at the moment around a number of things connected with that. Should they have this much wealth? How people feel given others in other countries are struggling? It's wealth made with Oil and some are feeling very uncomfortable right now.

Of course, we, the UK, spaffed our Oil and Gas money.....

You're in a fantastic part of the world - enjoy. Sounds like a cruise, otherwise I'd highly recommend an overnight glacier trek on Jostedalsbreen.

Went last year and going again in a few weeks. Cruised all the way up into the arctic circle and up to Spitsbergen. A week plus of non-stop day time was a bit weird. Also got ridiculously lucky with weather and had no rain until the last stop in Bergen on the way back down.

Doing a few stops in the south this year, including Olden. Fingers crossed the weather is good still.

Can't say I've heard that conversation, to be honest.

If you end up in the north, be sure to reach out to The Codfather
(Geir).

No more northerly based ITFC fan on planet earth and just an all round great guy.

Norway sounds incredible, FrimleyBlue. If you're up for more adventure, I'd highly recommend an overnight glacier trek on Jostedalsbreen it's an unforgettable experience.

Like I said, it's not something I'm hearing. People do feel fortunate but the profits from oil are invested for future generations. Norway took a huge financial gamble by investing in oil exploration. It paid off and has allowed the profits to be invested for future generations. Only 3% of the oil fund can be spent each year.
Working for the greater good of the people is a part of the culture here. The word 'dugnad' is much used here. It means, working for free, for the benefit of the community. Residents of housing estates have a couple of days of dugnad each year, where the residents come out and work to keep the area clean and tidy. Every parent of kids in sports clubs is expected to work for the club and to help raise money so that kids from less wealthy families can take part without having to worry about the cost. Prisons here are focussed on rehabilitation of offenders. Foreigners see the system as soft on crime but results seem to prove that it works and prisoners can go non to be productive members of society.
So, while Norwegians feel fortunate, they have worked very hard to achieve the quality of life that many have. Norway is certainly no utopia but the people are very proud and thankful to the generation that worked so hard and gave up so much, for the future of the nation.
The older people here are still very grateful for the allies that saved them from the nazis and they still feel the need to thank me for that. I do explain that I am not half the man those troops were and that I am equally grateful for their effort and sacrifice.

There's never been a cheaper time to come to Norway. A pound will get you 14 NOK right now. A pint will cost between 60 and 100 NOK.

You'd better let me know where because whenever my Oslo based colleagues take me out it's at that level.

I had a great night out in Tromso a few years back. Welcomed by Tromso fans as was in my 94 shirt, saw Morton Gamst play and then had some reasonably priced beers after.

Your colleagues can obviously afford it. I refuse to pay 100,- for a beer.

Hello.
No skylift this time. We booked the troll car excursion upto the glazier. And altho we had another few hours left after it we didn't want to take risk of doing sky lift without it being a cruise excursion incase of any time delays. We said we will come back and do that sky lift though another year.
About to go into our last stop today haughshund however you spell it. Going to a viking village this morning.

Yesterday we stopped at a lovely little port area called hellesylt, did our own thing and went for a walk up the mountains. Prime example of the need to stick to cruise excursions however as we took a mini boat into another area as part of an excursion and the boat back was delayed to a public ferry issue in the local area. So we actually missed the onboard deadline by an hour. We were fine as they had to wait for us and all others with us.

Must say every stop has been beautiful. Very lucky with weather. Not one drop rain on any day other than last night whilst on our boat. So it's been brilliant.

Regarding costs. Yesterday in a mini port restaurant we got 3 cokes. 2 pizzas and musscles and it came to approx £102 English conversion.
