Ukraine has manpower issues and it's why hopes of a total victory where they reclaim the Crimea are as farfetched as Russian hopes of total victory are.

However some of the biggest constraints Ukraine has are artificial or supply based. Ukraine is perfectly capable of using Storm Shadow, but we limit where they can. Same with ATACMs. Ukraine can use them, but restraints on using them inside Russia allows Putin to move elements out of the range of permitted systems.

The other big issue is artillery shells. Again training or manpower is not the issue. The issue is rationing shells. Although ironically this is a failure of the arms industry by not having anywhere near enough manufacturing capacity.

Thanks for the conversation. So much information to digest.

Not sure if you are still in the city that the username contains. I am in a neighbouring state much of the time so my interest with ongoing events.

My concern is the escalation and the ethics that 'we' become as bad as 'them'.. the further it goes it seems the values are shifting to anything is acceptable for 'victory'

Let's be clear neither leader is not without wealth or ego. But both speak the same language.

I really do not want my son conscripted to fight in this or any war.

I'm not actually Ukrainian and have no links apart from through some friends. My username is confusingly nothing to do with Ukraine at all, just a little nickname I've had with some friends since about 2000! You're not the first and won't be the last to make the connection though.

As for the battlefront, there are 2 discussions in the FT which relate to the latest offensive. The first is about pressure on Zelensky about Russia gaining ground faster in Donbas since the start of the Kursk offensive. The second is about Ukraine lobbying Biden directly with a list of all the targets they've found and identified and begging to be allowed to hit.

A popular Ukrainian commentator and officer in the army’s reserves, who goes by the online handle Tatarigami, said the breach in the frontline in the Donetsk region was “worsened” by the Kursk offensive, which he said “diverted experienced and motivated brigades, stripping stabilisation reserves and allowing Russian forces to advance rapidly.”

He also accused the Ukrainian military leadership of underplaying the gravity of the situation. “Unfortunately, the high command is still receiving reports about the ‘controlled situation’, which is far from being controlled … Lies, lies, lies,” he tweeted.
