O’Shea confirmed on 12:05 - Aug 25 with 5129 views | SitfcB | Can someone explain this signing to me please? Obviously this will mean Woolfenden will be dropped?? Which I think is harsh and I don’t like. This is the probably the first transfer that I’m not so sure on? It was reported he didn’t even want to come here? I hope we’re not getting players in just by offering them loads of cash??

In fairness, I wasn't sure whether Delap was really worth £15m when we first signed him and he's very quickly proving me wrong. Going off the stats from last year, O'Shea's biggest asset is pace. He was one of the fastest players in the Premier League in 2023/24. We've basically looked to upgrade every player from last year excluding Davis - it just happens that Woolfenden is almost the last one for it to happen to. Welcome to the Premier League. To survive there has to be a touch of ruthlessness which does feel uncomfortable but is probably necessary.

Looks a comfortably upgrade on Woolfy, who hasn’t let us down, but wouldn’t be rated anywhere near as highly if he wasn’t one of our own. Woolfenden was part of a defence that conceded a lot against much lower quality players. Some of that was the system we play but it’s also because I think he’s a top six Championship defender and probably nothing more. O’Shea was wanted by Brentford and Wolves as well. Woolfenden just isn’t a Top 10 Premier League defender which is where Brentford and Wolves will see themselves as hoping to be. It’s an upgrade. Like Cajuste is an upgrade on Luongo and Szmodics is an upgrade on Chaplin. Like Clarke is an upgrade on Broadhead and even Broja or similar would be an upgrade on Hirst. Part of me hates that our back to back hero’s are being replaced but we want to be here to stay and push on into Europe. We can’t do that with a team full of players from League One. What we’ve achieved is remarkable. Now is sadly the time to have a Premier League quality squad and those being replaced in the eleven will have a massive part to play still deservedly so. Just not as regular starters now.

So we can complete a new XI of signings... Muric Johnson - O'Shea - Greaves - Townsend Phillips - Cajuste Hutchinson - Szmodics - Clarke Delap Although Hutchinson probably doesn't count as he was with us last year, so Delap RW and just the new No.9 to bring in...

Means we have the next week to full focus and sort out the striker situation plus, of course, sorting out deals with others for Edmundson, Al-Hamidi and Ladapo.

I personally felt going in to this summer there was only 2 players who were ‘safe’ of their places, and that was Morsy and Davis … and that’s been evident in our recruitment, IMO. Harsh on some players as they’ve been a big part of the journey but we have to give ourselves the best possible chance of staying in this division and if McKenna feels that the majority of the 11 need upgrading, then so be it I suppose.

There are several position now where we have one top player and a backup, where the backup is great but still a noticeable step down. Apart from the pace aspect, I suspect that the O'Shea/Woolfie step difference is not that significant and there might be a little more sharing of that role than in some of the others in the defence. Woolfie has some very strong attributes and while McK rightly doesn't do too much rotation in the backline for the very good reason of maintaining a maximum instinctive understanding between defenders, it would be a good string to the bow to have two RCBs who can slot in and out seamlessly depending on the opposition.

We are also in a good position that if any of these players from last season are good enough at this level then they’ll keep themselves in the side over the course of the season and if they aren’t they won’t.

On the not wanting to come here bit, think it’s fairer to say he preferred to join a more-established PL club in Brentford. I’m not fussed by that part. As for replacing Wolfenden, I guess this an in inevitable process if we want to have a chance. I think Wolfy has done well overall in the last two games, which seems odd with six goals conceded but other than getting caught slightly out by very good players (Doku notably at one point in the first half) he’s not made mistakes.

Something has bugged at me for a while about whether we would look to play three at the back. Probably since Westlake mentioned it against Nice! That would open up the chance for another centre back, though part of me thinks Tuanzebe might be reverted to Woolfenden in that regard and, without sounding critical of the latter, for understandable reasons. The only issue with this would be limiting Clarke's opportunities. Hutchinson can come in and play more centrally as one of two tens, but Clarke is very much an out and out wide player. The backing we’re giving KM is incredible. Spent 30milliom on two players in a couple of days is ridiculous for us really. Might take a while for it all to gel properly. Clarke and Omari doing their thing could be a lot of fun to watch.

Just worked it out, and £92.5m so far this window (that's just base transfer fees, not including add-ons...or the fees for the loan players) [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 12:34]

He wanted Brentford, understandable as you could class them as an established prem team now, but they felt the L'pool lad was better than O'Shea. Wolves wanted him and apparently he was keen, but to be fair that seems more related to the fact his family is based in the midlands, but they couldn't agree a deal with Burnley. We are in the Prem and we will have to accept some players will join purely for the money - although I'm not saying that is the case here

It looks like Tuanzebe is going right-back which left another space open at centre-back. We conceded 2 or more goals on 17 occasions in the Championship, and 6 in 2 so far in the premier league. The bottom line is the defence needs better players. You never know, Woolfy may play out of his skin and keep O'Shea out.

Woolfy hasent done bad against top opposition, his biggest problem is lack of pace it shows, concentration to he has times of switching off which with the calibre of players facing we can't afford, He's a nice guy tbh,

By having more experienced and established defenders at the club will take some of the pressure off Woolfenden and give him more time and support to develop further. To expect him to be able to adjust quickly to the Prem standards is not fair on him. As with any step up in a job, you need time to adjust. [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 12:49]

Exactly this...I keep having to check I haven't missed some memo about Woolfy being immediately released. McK's approach has always been for there to be healthy competition for places and rotation depending on the details of who we're facing, it was only the run of injuries we had that stopped that. The "project" everyone talks about seems to encompass buying in to the fact that those who aren't in the XI make the most of their role and try to play their way back in. On that point, it's a little difficult to imagine McK has brought anyone in (possibly excluding Hutch) with any sort of cast-iron reassurance they're going to be undroppable in the team week-in-week-out. We might assume that having dropped £15m on these players that they're a fixture, but that's just the Premiership isn't it? As someone else said, Brentford just spent £10m more than we did on someone who never played for Liverpool. And if it's Woolfy's turn to be second fiddle, who's to say he won't turn into a monster like Burgess did, having looked like he was on his way out? It's Edmundson that this looks sad for, but he's third in the pecking order and can do better than that.

I saw him play against Luton first game and he was very impressive. He looks more of a dynamic centre half and certainly attacked the ball well at corners in the opponents box. I would say an uograde on Wolfie and thats no disrespect to him cos he was good v Liverpool

Like a lot of the team, Woolfy was a League one defender just a couple of years ago. He has the potential to be a good Premier League defender and hopefuly that will come. However, we don't have time for the "League One/Championship boys" to become experienced Premier League players. By the time they are, we will be down. So we need to get in someone with more experience. That doesn't close the door on Woolfy. He'll play less games but will gain that experience without the detriment to the team. That's how I see it anyway. [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 21:07]

I have thought about this to. But I sure it being mentioned that things like TV payments etc, yields PL teams an extra 150mil a year to the championship. So to me it sounds like we should be on the right side of this. Am I right in how I’m seeing this ?
