Watched the three parter on italia 90 with the boy recently as a bit of a history lesson. Toto and his dad were on a lot, the old man was so proud of him.
Can’t think of another footballer for whom the stars aligned so perfectly over such a short period of time.

My dad had a recording of the BBC summary of Italia 90. Despite being really young when it was actually on, that World cup is probably the one I know a lot about due to watching it a lot.

I was at the Italy vs Argentina semi-final down in Naples - one of the more extraordinary atmospheres due to Maradona's relationship with the locals.
Remember how quickly Italy seemed to effectively "shut" as soon as the penalties were over - bars, restaurants etc were all closed as we headed back to Sorrento.

What a legend of that time in Italy. Such a shame they didn't beat the Argies in the Semi finals. Think he got the golden boot. (no 100% on that) His goal celebration became legendry. Such a sad time and absolutely no age. Thanks for the memories Toto.

Very sad. He was very much the face of Italia 90. Great character.
RIP Signor Schillachi
Was that Roger Milla's world cup as well? Think it was. Another amazing star was born during what was otherwise a pretty rubbish tournament. (especially the final)

I've had this discussion with people before who laud the 90 World Cup as the best ever.
I think it was more about the characters that came to the fore, Gazza, Milla, Schillachi etc than the quality of the football itself.

I actually turned the final off it was so bad.
The World Cup of 1982 was a brilliant tournament. Another Italian, Paolo Rossi, walked off with the golden boot in that one. A truly great tournament and final. For our older members, the 1970 tournament was also a classic. That Brazilian side was just awesome.

And for those of us who are even older it will always be 1966,
Gianluca Vialli was also a key member of that team. Both he and Salvatore have both died in the last two years still in their 50s. They say sh*t happens, sadly it seems to happen more to good people. RIP.
