Burgess and Woolfenden 15:36 - Sep 23 with 3010 views | DJR | This sort of question must have been asked before, but would both Burgess and Woolfenden have travelled to Southampton just in case of injuries? And if they did, what happens before, during and after a game? Are they in and around the changing rooms before the game? Are they able to sit with with the subs and trainers etc, or are they banished to somewhere else? Are they able to celebrate in the changing rooms with their team mates after the game? The reason I ask is that I feel a bit for them (especially Burgess), and it would be nice to think they still feel part of the matchday experience, realising of course that I don't think they are permitted on the pitch with the subs. Looked like they were doing a bleep test. At least join the others for the warm up and some rondos or drills. Really really bizarre way of separating them from the team, but keeping them close just in case we get an injury last minute.

I believe the shuttle runs are about trying to keep players exercise loads at about the same levels. Some players do them prematch and others do them post-match - you quite often see the unused subs doing the same when managers are being interviewed post-match. Our players who travel but don't make the squad are often used in the warm ups when the different units defence, attackers, etc break out and do their own specific bits of prep.

Post match makes sense. If this is what they're doing, but pre match, what happens if we end up needing them, and they've just done 'match equivalent exercise' shuttle runs & then have to go and play a full match

Thanks for getting us up - now go and train away from the first team as we don't even need you on the bench. In a way, I think I take it more personally than the players themselves.

That's not true though is it. They train together all week.

I honestly don't think either will mind. Burgess came from Accrington he's now a prem squad player Wolfy was in the bomb squad and now a prem squad player. They will both play games this season at some point. They could of course go elsewhere in Jan. But there's no garentees of course that they'd be first choice cbs.

That is very true. And if anyone can manage the players who have lost their places - not just those two but Luongo and Chaplin too - then it's McKenna.

Exactly. And the team itself. The success hasn't just been those in the lineups it's those who support from behind the scenes. As long as they are good eggs then it's good for everyone to have them around on matchdays.

I sense if they weren't McKenna wouldn't have them around. Just thinking of the way Williams disappeared even though left back cover would have been useful.

Burgess will have one eye on the World Cup in 2026 and may eventually feel he needs to play games. McKenna treats everyone similarly in a group, whether they are playing or not. I doubt either will leave this season, and if we were to go down, every chance they'd be back playing regularly next season.

Every footballer wants to play, and if they don’t … well you don’t want them. Must be incredibly hard to manage. I mean, if you are Chaplin, Burgess, Taylor, Luongo etc it will be great to be in Premier League but that feeling will only last so long if you’re not playing much or at all.

Moreover, even if sitting on the bench, they're one injury or a bit of rotation away from starting games.
