This makes a very good point. Because we want to stay up so badly, it's tempting to view Southampton as one that we have to win, and maybe even 'should' win. But we were away from home against a team with a very similar record to us last season. I appreciate that we beat them last season, but there was not much between us over the course of the season.

However, it is worth looking at all of the data, and we can't escape the fact that we allowed them 4 big chances versus 0 for last season, and their xG was 3 times higher. Maybe this just means it was a wide open game. yet we only conceded one, and didn't defend badly overall. Better finishing, or more likely, one fewer outstanding save from Muric, and we lose that game.

Which brings me on to Muric. He dropped a clanger against City in a game we realistically would have lost come what may. He's been really good in the tighter games. Which means that he's gaining us more points than he's costing us, even if we allow him a daft mistake every five games.

The massive difference in xG suggests Muric played much better than Ramsdale and yet Ramsdale made several good saves on the highlights. Is the xG down to the fact their strikers missed some easy chances (Archer hitting the post springs to mind) and our goal coming from a very low xG situation?

What is seen as an easier chance btw

The one archer hit the post with despite a tight angle but no keeper

Or Davis where he had a keeper to beat but 3 qtres of the goal to aim at.

You'd guess the former due to getting past muric but then he had a smaller target to hit than davis.

My limited understanding of xG here but I think it'd be whatever one is scored more often from that position.

I'd imagine the Archer one had higher.

Wish I still had access to the individual stats for this sort of stuff.

Impressive amount of mental gymnastics going on there. In the only stat that counts we were poorer than last season.

Expectations did seem a tad on the high side though. Besides, this must be a Twitter thing, as most comments I’ve seen on here weren’t particularly critical of us (although I missed the real time posting during the match).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
