Two 13 year olds get just 8 years detention on 14:45 - Sep 27 with 2462 views | NorthLondonBlue2 | They will only be released if they are deemed no longer to be a risk to the public. That may mean that they are never released, released much later in life or, at the earliest at 20. It's a horiffic case, but the judge's sentencing remarks and explanation were reported by the BBC article you quoted which is consistent with the law as I understand it.

And one of them was groomed -“He was also described as a “victim of modern slavery and had suffered severe disruption during his upbringing, experiencing violence from an early age” Plus they’ll both be on licence for the rest of their lives. [Post edited 27 Sep 2024 15:10]

Two 13 year olds get just 8 years detention on 15:14 - Sep 27 with 2316 views | Kropotkin123 | They killed someone and could be out in 8 years. The family said they they were disappointed with the verdict and 15 years minimum would have been fair. They didn't think 8 years would be a deterrent to others picking up a knife and doing the same.

"Mrs Justice Tipples explained to the court how the minimum term was decided for the two boys. She said the starting minimum term for the offence was 13 years, but that this was reduced due to their ages. At the time of the murder, one of the boys had recently turned 12 and the other was closer to 12 than 13 in age. For the first boy, who was the owner of the machete, she said he was not as emotionally mature as a typical 12-year-old." This doesn't help the family of course, but does explain the sentencing guidlines used by the judge.
| Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness. |

Surely anyone murdering other people isn't as emotionally mature as others there age. I don't really see that as a justification for a lesser sentence. For what it is worth, this isn't an issue with the judge itself, it is the framework the judge is operating in. I believe in rehabilitation. But I also think there has to be some sort of meaningful consequence and 8 years isn't it for taking the life of someone else. When I see rape sentences I typically feel the same way - consequences that don't fit the crime. [Post edited 27 Sep 2024 20:28]

As I have said time and again here. Go and find / read the actual sentencing comments. Then criticise based on an understanding. Newspapers pick the simplistic, click driving angle.
Two 13 year olds get just 8 years detention on 21:26 - Sep 27 with 1961 views | BloomBlue | I'm actually starting to.think the US maybe heading in the right direction, with prosecuting parents of kid under 16 (I think it's u16) who commit a gun crime. I remember a few years ago some people were advocating this, if a kid under 16 commits a serious offence the parents are also given the same sentence. The theory being parents start taking their responsibilities as a parent seriously. I know that opens up all sorts of questions. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Nonsensical. If you can prove that the parenting was objectively reckless and bad- sure. But that is another issue, to prosecuting a person for the crimes of another.

Nonsensical reasons #2 and #3 - Show me one child anywhere, any time, who’s always done everything their parents told them to do & who never did anything their parents told them not to; and sadly, some kids do have mental health problems which means their behaviour can be beyond any parental control or influence. Rather than saying time and again, provide a source. The original post was from the BBC which seemed adequate to me.

Not for me to do the most basic of research for you- that is what you should do yourself before deciding what you reckon.... And my point is much wider than this case. Before sharing the Daily Mail's rage at something, look at the actual information. Judges give sentencing remarks which explain the background and how the sentence was arrived at. The Daily Mail ignore them, unless they fit a pre formed rage-narrative. [Post edited 28 Sep 2024 11:12]

What evidence do I need for suggesting that it is always worth reading the sentencing remarks before expressing a robust view about some sentencing?

I read it on the BBC, on the link provided. If you want us to consider different information then provide it. Clearly you have no clue what you are talking about, hence you have no evidence that is different to what I have written.
