Another stadium post 13:07 - Oct 1 with 5267 views | baxterbasics | Reading the comments about FPR just now, I thought this might warrant it's own discussion. Should we be an established Prem team say 3 to 5 years from now, can you foresee the club building a shiny new stadium, maybe away from the Town centre? Would you support or oppose this? Where would be a good location?

Another stadium post on 13:52 - Oct 1 by Churchman | Yes, my mackem mates mentioned that when I met up with them in York last week. They also said its build on old mine workings and nobody has any idea where the tunnels are. They reckon one day when the crowd goes up for a goal the whole lot could disappear down a big hole. |
When you say 'could disappear down a big hole' - aren't you just describing Sunderland itself?

Another stadium post on 13:50 - Oct 1 by Illinoisblue | If a new Cobbold stand is going to cost 100million then an entire new stadium would be 500m - 700m. I know Ashton and the owners are ambitious but I don’t see any universe where it happens. |
Everton's new stadium cost is running at c.£750m at present.

Another stadium post on 14:29 - Oct 1 by SouthfieldsBlue | Am I correct in thinking we still don't own the land underneath the stadium, so we couldn't sell it for redevelopment either, which is generally how these get funded. |
The Council own the land. To be fair, alternative use land prices in Ipswich wouldn't get close to helping with the development costs of a new stadium.

According to my mackem chums, pretty much yes. I’ve been to N’castle with work, but I don’t know S’land at all. [Post edited 1 Oct 2024 18:25]

True although we’d need about 25k less capacity than they’ll have

Thankfully for them they don't score that many.
Another stadium post on 17:33 - Oct 1 with 959 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Agree with everyone else, but also, I can't see it being financially viable. It'd have to be a lot bigger than Portman Road to make it worth the bother... and the cost of that would be ridiculous, even if we'd been established in the Prem a few years. And with the council owning the current land, we wouldn't even be able to raise funds selling that off. Just can't see it making sense on any level.

Another stadium post on 17:44 - Oct 1 with 948 views | wrightsrightglove | Can’t see us ever leaving PR. I really really hope a deal can be done for the club to buy the car park behind the cobbold. The swimming pool will never get built there so it would be far better for the town if the council sold it to the club and allowed them to develop it into something special. That would give the club a decent size chunk of land to do with as they please when combined with the ground, training ground and staples site. Some of the developments the Americans have been involved with have been really impressive. Develop the ground, build a conference centre, club hotel, various bars and restaurants etc. [Post edited 1 Oct 2024 17:51]

Another stadium post on 14:05 - Oct 1 by SitfcB | An out of town stadium would completely kill off what is left of the town centre, especially the pubs. Ashton has always said how good it is to have a town centre location for the local economy etc. [Post edited 1 Oct 2024 14:42]

Exactly. The revival of the club and the development of the stadium and the area around it are a massive boon for the town. It's so well located in terms of close to the station and close to the town centre, supporting multiple pubs and cafes etc in the process. Would be a disaster if we moved.

The only way that I could see for a major new stadium is to turn the pitch through 90 degrees and use the practice pitch.
Their proposed capacity is 52,000. on 18:19 - Oct 1 with 889 views | Marshalls_Mullet |

Another stadium post on 13:44 - Oct 1 by StochesStotasBlewe | Definitely not. Can be a bit of pain in the arse getting away after matches sometimes, but being close to the station, plenty of pubs and eateries within 15 minutes or so currently, it’s a great location for a football stadium. Would be absolutely amazed if we were to ever move from Portman Road to be honest. |
In you think it's a pain getting away from Portman Road i wonder if you been to many away grouds of a similar size. For the size of stadium i think Portman Road has the be far and away the easiest stadium to get away from that i've experienced, whether that be by foot, road or train. You can basically head out of the ground in every direction and nowhere becomes a bottleneck. So accessible, we are incredibly lucky on the location of our ground. Anyway one expecting to park within a stones throw of a football stadium and have a quick get away is living in fantasy land, it doesn't exist.

I'd echo that, having done every one of the 92, plus many other grounds, UK and elsewhere. ITFC offers parking right next to the stadium at a fraction of the cost of similar elsewhere. Free parking within a mile. Parking with quickish getaway within a 15-minute walk (possibly even nearer, but i'm not sure). A railway station within 10 minutes' walk with a reasonable service. Buses all around town and further within 10 minutes walk.
