Apparently, he had the star struck ref in his pocket. (cool story bro) Personally, its some Ex-Charlton bod whose name escapes me (in an over 45s game). Beat that!

Best player you've played with / against? on 15:01 - Oct 3 with 4761 views | urbanblue | Many years ago in the late 70's as a teenager the Sunday football team I played for made a trip to Benidorm. Basically, just a p1ss up but we had a couple of matches arranged against a Spanish Team and a team of Ex Pats. Anyhow, we rocked up to play the ex pats to find a bunch of generally mid 30's and 40's blokes, many looking a bit worse for wear but boy were they good. There was one bloke strutting around the middle of the park who was so obviously of a higher standard that left me, at the time young fit and thinking I was the business, chasing shadows. I mean I'll never forget noticing how this bloke was controlling the game at times not even touching the ball. Just movement to send two of us going the wrong way to make space for a team mate. It was an absolute education. We couldn't live with them and we got thrashed. They were even having half time drinks of beers!! Anyhoo, after the game we found out a lot of the team were ex pros ... and the magician in the midfield. Well, it was Tony Kay, the English International and Britains most expensive player at the time, who got kicked out out of British Football in the Great betting scandal of 1964. For the younguns out there he played for Sheffield Wednesday and he and another player Peter Swan layed bets that Wednesdsy would lose a game against, yes, Ipswich in 1962. Town won 2-0 with Ray Crawford netting both goals. I was just a baby when the actual scandal happened but it was sensational at the time and I believe there are books and films about it. He was in Spain at the time as he was wanted in Britain for some other con. What a player though. He literally nearly put two of us on our arses just with a dummy off the ball. Sorry, long post, but a great memory that the thread bought back. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Kay https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_British_football_match-fixing_scandal [Post edited 3 Oct 2024 15:14]

Played against N*rwich and Posh U16s as well (when I was an U18) so might have been a player or two in there but Hartson is the only one I remember.

Similar tale, though I started. Jason leonard and I was in the opposing front row, the first time I realised the skill involved in playing there beyond being able to shove hard.

Best player you've played with / against? on 15:30 - Oct 3 with 4544 views | RobTheMonk | Icechi Anya played a half for us once. He was friendly with a lot of our players. Matty Taylor (Bristol/Oxford) played a few games with. Paul Gibson who was Man United's third choice goalie for a bit in the 90's. He was unbelievably good out pitch and you could see he was not even going full pelt. Played with Christian Pulisics parents for about a year too (friendly 5 a side). Really lovely people. Mark played professional indoor football if I remember correctly.
Best player you've played with / against? on 15:31 - Oct 3 with 4537 views | VanSaParody | This thread is triggering all sorts of memories! I recall playing Sunday league as a kid on a pitch behind Barnet's old Underhill ground, & while play was up the other end, from a distance, I saw a man walking his dog on the footpath behind my goal, & the dog looked like Schnorbitz The closer they got, while the play was still up the other end, it was indeed Bernie Winters & his famous dog I sad "morning Bernie" "Morning 'keeper"

aaah. I went to Farlingaye! A long time before you I'd imagine. I played against Roger Osborne once and cut him in half with a sliding tackle from about 10 yards away. The pitch was very slippery and I barrelled into him. He went down and stayed down like a proper pro. But I really didn't hit him very hard.
Best player you've played with / against? on 15:38 - Oct 3 with 4487 views | VanSaParody | Attended a 6 day residential Bob Wilson goalkeeping school He was assisted all week by Joe Corrigan It had rained, so we all put our kit in the laundry room, but when it was dry, I couldn't find my socks (white Adidas 3 blue stripes) There was a pair of white with 2 blue stripes unclaimed & somebody said they were Joe Corrigan's So I had to go & find big Joe & swap our socks back over! Just remembered, at the end of the course, we were assessed & me & a certain Neil Sullivan were joint top of our age group [Post edited 3 Oct 2024 21:01]
