Yesterday travelling by train. 07:15 - Oct 4 with 5239 viewsBenters

I went into Colchester yesterday from Benters Central,on the return journey I was greeted by two ticket inspectors on the approach to the station platform, not only that they had with them two ‘Revenue Protection Officers’.

I have never seen these before,I also got checked on the train by the conductor.I am old School and believe if you travel by train you should buy a ticket.

The funny thing was a couple of yoofs laden with pizza boxes thought they would just push past all four of these people, their argument was they were only going to the next stop so didn’t need to buy a ticket. They got turned around and wouldn’t let them on the platform.

So off they trudged down to the Hythe.

Saw them a couple of weeks ago en route from London back to Ipswich.

Imagine having to pay for a service you are using. World's gone mad.

They’re intimidating and nasty.

If the prices weren’t so stupid for the shorter journey people would happily buy a ticket.

I don’t discourage it.

Good. Scumbags that don’t buy a ticket make it more expensive for those of us that do. It’s thieving, basically, and my world they’d get six months in a chain gang picking up litter from the hard shoulder for that.

I always buy a ticket when i travel by train. (I used to do a fair bit of fare dodging when I was young!). But I do begrudge the prices given we have a third world train service beset with delays and cancellations.

Travelling on Greater Anglia…check you millionaire.

‘Great British Railways’ are coming (assuming no u-turn from Starmer), the franchises will be re-nationalised once they expire. Anyone expecting cheaper travel is probably going to be disappointed, but at least we won’t be subsidising services abroad.

Yes and no more of those foreign built engines either please, I'm sick of those jumped up comfy and modern Italian trains / Hitachi built bullet trains, lets bring back good old British built Leyland buses sitting on train wheels or even better, Stephenson's Rocket

The new trains on the Greater Anglia routes are less comfortable than the old ones.

Greater Anglia, as of 2 weeks ago, passed the date from which franchise can be terminated for any reason.

Could be one of the first to join the five England franchises already being run by DoT.

Suspect though, despite what people say, it is one of the better run franchise.

I haven't been on a train to Suffolk in years. Used to travel back from London often during a 20 period to see family and every Sunday there was always a bus replacement service. Maybe once in that timeframe there was an actual train that ran Ipswich to Liverpool street.

Is it still the same?

Agreed - anyone would think that they are responsible for hundreds of passengers daily and in control of a huge bit of kit over large distances.

Should be a minimum wage job.

Well the leftist Trade unions demanding better pay for a terrible service they provide yeah. Who cares you can't get to work on time. John the driver got a nice 15% rise on his 70k train driver salary, so that's all good.

They’ve already threatened to come back for more money.

Didn’t they only reach agreement after it was agreed to split wages from conditions of employment. Only way wages could have been agreed. Thought it was just the ingoing dispute about other matters than lead to most recent threat of industrial action.

According to Old Sparky in the latest Private Eye, there is a competitive market for highly trained drivers which has fuelled impressive pay rises since the 1990s and sometimes left firms short of drivers.

Who'd have thunk it?

Basically they are in the cab incase something goes wrong. I have a client who happens to drive a train on Thames Link. He say's he's there to give passengers confidence, as trains are vertilly driverless.

compared to alot of countries around the world, I can assure you we have nothing like a third world train service in comparison. we have trains for a start, theyre mostly reliable, timetabled, frequent, not unnecessarily slow and useful.

alot of first world countries dont have train services that meet those standards.

heres an example in America, you have to check luggage in like an airline, and on some routes luggage is considered as anything bigger than a small rucksack, its down to the station staff to decide, which goes in a luggage car.

now the exciting thing is your luggage might not travel with you on the same train, it will end up (probably) in the same place as you, but not necessarily at the same time, it depends on how much space they have, the only way to guarantee it arrives on the train you are taking is to book it in a day early.

now think about that next time you take a train in the UK, everyone with a bag bigger than a small rucksack checking in their bags a day before just to ensure they have it at their destination when they arrive.

and then tell me the UK train service is third world.
