Is it a positive, or a concern… 22:20 - Oct 5 with 1982 viewsMatt_Netherlands

… that none of their goals today were as a result of us being outplayed and cut open?

They were a cut above us in many respects, but none of their goals were really anything of class. In one hand it’s reassuring that if we cut those mistakes out, we will be a lot tighter.on the other hand, continued mistakes over time become a trend and not a one off.

First goal: Clearly gave the ball away in midfield

Second goal: Our defenders stood still and reacted slowly when the ball hit the bar, Muric also just flapped at the rebound.

Third goal: The backpass

Fourth goal: Leif was caught way out of position

clearly a concern?

the gift one of the poorer teams in the league 4 goals on a plate could never be a positive...

better teams will cut us open in ways west ham couldn't.

I just can't get over the back pass. I can't decide if it's unintentional, he caught it wrong, intentional and he thought he was playing a good pass or he just wanted to have a laugh. So weird and so many better options that what happened.

Davis caught way out of position should be a concern as it's a reoccurring theme.

Either way, some players need to wake the fk up real quick or it’ll be December, we’ll still be winless and clinging to “well we had a good half against Liverpool and Villa” .

Like Villa and Brighton you mean , it’s football , just watched Man City and their defence was awfull but Fulham could only muster the two against them ….all teams have sh!t days at the back .
Just saying .

I do wonder when our fans will start to actually be concerned.

We can spend week after week saying "well it's just one game" and coast into a relegation.

Seems a lot of fans are happy to just be in the big time and make up the numbers.
I'd like to see us compete.

It was a theme last season as well, but we are more likely to be punished at premier level than at championship level ; also Burgess was adept at covering the vacant space left by Leif. Greaves is much more the big central stopper.

It’s a fair point, but the vast majority of the goals we’ve conceded have been gift wrapped & tagged for the opposition.

The aberration at Man City when we capitulated for 3 mins, the ridiculous amount of space we gave Liverpool for their goals. Let’s be honest, they really should have had x4 as well.

Both goals we conceded against Villa were soft. The Traore goal for Fulham was also weak from us.

Today, as KM said, it wasn’t hard work for West Ham to stick another x4 past us.

We’ll never be Arsenal, but we’ve been extremely shoddy, defensively, so far.

The concern will be there no doubt further into the season if poor form continues, my point was ALL teams have bad days at the back ……far to early to moan and groan and have hissy fits .
Yes we ere poor but good days in this league are going to be quite rare and we move on to the next opportunity to put it right.
Ps I’m confident we will stay up for what it’s worth .

Second goal was nothing to do with Muric.

He did well to be stood back up so quickly, had no time to react.

As well as we played last week, a lot if Villa fans said they had been very poor compared to their usual standards.

That made me slightly concerned about todays game.

But for the first and third there was still a lot to do to score and they did cut through us to do it. Concern

I think we were fortunate Villa had one eye on Bayern, to be honest. If they hadn't, they would have gone for the third rather than trying to settle for 2-1. From what happened last week and yesterday, teams won't settle against us now. Attack is the best form of defence.

A huge concern as we would expect in most games to be outplayed given it's our first season in the prem for over 20 years. The odd mistake you expect but it's been every game. As great as Davis is, defensively he is not yet premier league standard. I have not seen anything from O'Shea that he is better than Wolf and Greaves for the most part has been the pick of the defence. We also missed Axel today. Muric looks fantastic one minute awful the next.

In this league mistakes get punished, in L1/Championship you can more often than not get away with it. Let's be honest WHU had at least 3 other great chances to score and we were lucky to get away with 4-1. Equally had Brigthon scored when we played them it would likely have been a big defeat and Southampton should have scored a second. At this level we cannot keep gifting goals as unlike in the lower leagues we will not score enough to counter it.
