Now the dust has settled 14:06 - Oct 6 with 3584 viewsbadadski

Just my thoughts - I think and even McKenna acknowledged that he completely mismanaged this game and we didn’t give West Ham the respect they deserve as well as from now on giving every other team in this division. It was on par with last season where are free flowing football went to our heads and we tried to outplay Leeds and got our ass handed to us both games.

Not to say I want to stop trying the way we play but it has to be more managed. Leagues below it was about risk and reward, the playing out from the back was needed to draw teams out that were sitting back and the rewards outweighed the risk. This season the risk completely outweighs the reward. Almost every goal we have conceded and an opportunity that an opposition should have scored from has come from a mistake with is trying to play out from the back or a cross from a wide position. Literally almost every goal.

We can’t afford to give teams the opportunity and expect to stay in the league. At times it was playing out from the back for the sake of playing out from the back -and no reason to do so. When Muric passed to morsey with his back to the rest of the field, what was the point. West Ham had 5 players in our box at that moment of time. We didn’t neeed to draw them to us as they were already there. I thought we got a goal keeper who was good with his feet and accurate with his kicking to make quick breaks. Why is morsey coming so deep to collect the ball. We have 6 playsers back in our own box so straight away have isolated the wingers and Delap. I just don’t see the point. It’s like Kane and England -

At times I was seeing balls that could be made - admittedly from a higher vantage point and not so easy to see for a player ground level but time and time again there were splitting balls or over the top balls to be played to free a player that were missed. Why have we got a team full of pacey players and then not utilise them?

We needed more physicality and Omari at the moment playing as a 10 is rendering him self inert, I remember last season szmodics against us and so many’s other teams as a 10 was an absolute beast, letting players gets close to him and beating them with physically and skill, not only that but scoring a crap load of goals and bringing other into play. Omari doesn’t have the build to do this. He is pushed back and wide time and time again and allowing the ball to be stolen from him, not even his fault but he doesn’t have the strength to hold up 2 premier league quality beasts with
Pace.

There will be a time from playing out for the back and games where teams have fallen deep where we need to do it but like so many’s commentators and pros are saying it feels like we are trying to over play to show that we can compete and to try and gain some respect but in doing so we are massively biting our noses to spite our faces and actually making ourselves look silly.

Just my thoughts - hopefully this game will be the wake up call we needed -

What has goals from crosses out wide got to do with playing out from the back?

I think the gist is right but don’t agree with all of it.

Omari is playing centrally because he’s our biggest threat there in general. Some work for him to do still of course.

Yes agree with all that, the frustration was that we seemed to have weathered the odd bit of early pressure and by the 35th or even 37th minute looked the more likely to pinch it. We just imploded after that for whatever reason. Wet spam of course have the quality of player that aren’t going to miss too much when you hand them chances on a plate or allow them to build pressure out of nothing.

The clamour for Omari on the right and Szmodics in the middle has a very 'bring Celina on' vibe to me, let alone that the tactical reshuffle necessary to make that work effectively would be suicidal in this league IMO as we'd require the right side to operate like the left.

We could do that in the Championship to an extent as we were happy to make it a shootout against anybody but leaving ourselves more exposed than we already are at times would completely negate any perceived positive of shuffling the front lot around.

Omari's a marked man - every time he gets the ball he's got at least 2 players thundering into him. Sure he needs to learn to cope with that better but he's learning and that we're a) still trying to funnel the ball through him at almost every opportunity, and b) he still looks the most likely to create something shows his importance to the team in there.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

After a really poor first minute, we just did not manage the game well.
On 40 we were under the cosh we should have hit the deck with an injury to take the sting out the game and gone in 1-1

It’s not just about Omari being there, but him filling a position of someone who looked better and was a specialist to that position last season scoring 30 odd goals and who looks better built to deal with the demands of bigger defenders. I can comment too much as haven’t seen szmodics play enough games in this league to comment on it fully. It could be that it’s a step too far for him also but we don’t know as don’t see what goes on in training sessions. Omari has always been better for us with Space but in this league not only does he not have space but also has far less game time to impose him self as we do not have the possession stats that we did against teams over the last 2 seasons and all I have seen this season is him being bullied off the ball, knocked down or being tackled when being driven away from goal into blind alley. It’s tough but we have to adapt and after yesterdays watching how ineffective Clarke and Hutchinson were that it wasn’t a coincidence that they were the slightest players in stature. It wasn’t just them though as I rate them both massively but Clarke doesn’t offer the cover for leif that seems to be required and same for cover for Johnson yesterday. Could put it down to a good hammers game but think it was a mixture of us playing into there hands after the villa game where we weee amazing but a lot
Of down to villa allowing us to play more by slowing play down rather than pressing us

Szmodics must start in the no 10 ... his wily experience and ability to find space will create opportunities.

It makes little sense to sign last season's top scorer in the Championship and then not play him in his preferred position.

Put Omari and Clarke out wide ... with their close ball control and space to run into they will pose problems.

Or leathered it up the pitch. We’ve not been bad in the last couple of years at the odd ‘injury’ at an opportune time but I suppose it’s the non stop pressure in the prem.

What has goals from crosses out wide got to do with playing out from the back?

Nothing just mentioning another massive weakness of ours which needs to be addressed although some of them have come from playing out from the back with long balls to leif who whoever was in wide position and them getting tackled as no room to work with, cross comes in and goal.

We concede too many goals from crosses, We concede a lot of goals from mistakes playing out from the back, if we don’t want to be relegated then it will need to be addressed ? Not that hard to fathom surely. Unless you think we don’t then fair enough.

“although some of them have come from playing out from the back with long balls to leif who whoever was in wide position and them getting tackled as no room to work with, cross comes in and goal.”

That was the bit that was hard to fathom, as it wasn’t written in a fathomable form of English.

How many have we conceded from playing out from the back? Once at Man City and one at Southampton when Tuanzebe should have just cleared it.

Why did we buy szmodics if we didn't feel he would be a central threat?

If the plan was to play him left. Then why get clarke?
I don't get the Sammy signing tbh if we won't see him playing the role that made him a target.

The clamour is to make use of the players in positions that bring the best out of them.

Most prem sides have inverted forwards. It's the most dangerous position and we've got 2 very good ones at our disposal not being used.

I agree some things only work in levels below the prem. So why does it mean we have to continue to rely on the davis effect rather than utilising the inverted wingers with a top quality central player in szmodics behind delap, davis and Johnson or who ever can concentrate on defending and when the opportunity comes. Go on the overlap.

We will of course see how this plays out. We've had some good competitive games and hopefully what ever we are working on comes together and all this discussions become pointless as we've got a few wins going and everything is ticking nicely.

But until we do start winning then its absolutely right to wonder why we are playing some square pegs in round holes.

I agree with the general gist of the OP. I don't think it is an overexaggeraton to say that how Kieron and the team respond to this comprehensive defeat will decide our staying up or not. Like our last year's defeats against Leeds, Kieron did not change a plan that was clearly not working. I think he is a super manager but he is going to have to respond in game and stem bad tactics. Look how Hurzeler turned around the game against Tottenham. I am confident that both our manager and team have it in them to survive in the Premiership but we are going to have to maximise our talents in this pressure cooker environment. There are going to be small margins in our survival or not. COYB.
