London Gateway £1bn investment possibly flushed down the toilet. Good or bad? 12:51 - Oct 12 with 9000 views | Churchman | The Transport Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister piled in on P&O this week because of the disgraceful way they treated U.K. staff a couple of years ago. P&O is owned by DP World and it looks like thanks to the above (as reported) they have decided investment in two new docking births for the container operation will no longer happen and nor will attendance at Starmer’s investment summit. Given how they treat staff, is it right to tell DP World to do one, accept the loss of investment, jobs and added costs to business or would Angela Rayner and Louise Haigh been better to leave them alone? They knew Starmer’s little gathering was next week, so I can only assume the timing was deliberate to pressure DP World and it’s blown up in their face? Not always the case by any means, but this does strike me in this instance as moral high ground v jobs, business, taxes for services. This is an interesting dynamic that reminds me a bit of Vodaphone in the 2000s. They got away with an easy tax settlement because they made it clear that if that didn’t happen, U.K. jobs were toast as they could locate anywhere.

London Gateway £1bn investment possibly flushed down the toilet. Good or bad? on 15:10 - Oct 13 by NewcyBlue | Regarding the automation, there have been strikes in North America because of DP World’s introduction of further automation https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-port-strike-throws-spotlight-big-union-foe-a I’ll be in Vancouver next week, joining ship. I will ask the stevedores more about it. If DP world pulled out of Southampton or London Gateway someone else would happily take their place. There are many terminal operators all over the world, you’ll find that companies rarely use their own terminals exclusively. Maersk for instance don’t only use APM terminals on Los Angeles, they also use Long Beach Container Terminal. It’s the same at Algeciras, Tangier Med, Tanjung Pelepas, various places over the world. |
Felixstowe aren't taking class 1 at the moment so we are forced to go into Soton. I'm not sure if it's CMA or the port of Soton that's the problem but everything we have had through there this year has been terrible. Everything seems to be in meltdown, however they may not be alone as Antwerp is a nightmare as well. We had a vessel stuck there for a week recently. It seems the world of shipping is in a terrible state. Red Sea hasn't helped though. Are the poor crew still stuck on the MV Dali?

The Dali has been moved to Norfolk, VA. I believe more than half the crew are still detained by the US authorities. What’s your issue with CMA? I know the U.K. Port Ops General Manager for them, I can have a word or put you in touch?

As I said, I’m not sure if it’s CMA or port of Southampton. Every vessel we’ve had stuff on this year, thus far has been delayed by at least a week. Maybe it’s assorted ports worldwide all taking longer and each putting a day on the journey. I’m in the pub at the moment but from memory the last vessel was Rivoli which was delayed about a week. Tomorrow night we have the Palais Royal docking and I’m pretty sure that was originally due on the 4th. We have 5 containers on that 🙈🙈🙈 Rumour has it a competitor of ours had two containers taken off in Dunkirk or Antwerp by mistake. Mind you. Currently they are the only kids on the block!!!!!

The re-routing due to avoiding the Red Sea will be a contributing factor. Also the weather on the coast of South Africa will be fairly brutal too, which will cause delays. The CMA CGM lost 40 something boxes overboard off the coast of South Africa in July. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’re taking additional weather routeing precautions as a result.

Maybe. Gotta say, what with the cost of re routing everything to avoid Red Sea, I’m surprised multi Big Govs haven’t agreed to completely destroy both the Houthis and the meddling of Iran. Or are the shipping companies enjoying this price bonanza?

Shipping companies have massively profited from it. https://www.seatrade-maritime.com/containers/container-lines-make-5-4bn-profit-a

Thing is….. When Covid had its first year and everything went nuts, all the containers ended up where they shouldn’t be and it became a free for all. Class 1 freight went from $9k to $25k per container and we had no choice but to pay it. Normal cargo went from $2k to $9k They eventually came down to near normal but as they know everyone will pay it they put it up again in July for the Christmas rush. In June we were paying $14k but by August it was $21k. So, I’m not sure it’s all about Red Sea crisis as that was last October.

There’ll be too much in it for DP World to worry about what a firebrand Minister like Rayner says. Not that she was wrong: P&O treat(ed?) their staff like crap. Not exactly diplomatic though God knows what it’s costing the public purse in terms of sweeteners.

It was Louise Haigh who called for a boycott of P&O, not Rayner. But yeah, a whole load of nonsense over nothing.
| Trust the process. Trust Phil. |
