London Gateway £1bn investment possibly flushed down the toilet. Good or bad? 12:51 - Oct 12 with 9001 views | Churchman | The Transport Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister piled in on P&O this week because of the disgraceful way they treated U.K. staff a couple of years ago. P&O is owned by DP World and it looks like thanks to the above (as reported) they have decided investment in two new docking births for the container operation will no longer happen and nor will attendance at Starmer’s investment summit. Given how they treat staff, is it right to tell DP World to do one, accept the loss of investment, jobs and added costs to business or would Angela Rayner and Louise Haigh been better to leave them alone? They knew Starmer’s little gathering was next week, so I can only assume the timing was deliberate to pressure DP World and it’s blown up in their face? Not always the case by any means, but this does strike me in this instance as moral high ground v jobs, business, taxes for services. This is an interesting dynamic that reminds me a bit of Vodaphone in the 2000s. They got away with an easy tax settlement because they made it clear that if that didn’t happen, U.K. jobs were toast as they could locate anywhere.

Early signs (like this) are that they will. Tbf on Vodafone the Competition and markets authority are dragging them and 3 through an endless process to approve a merger every party desperately needs, including our national telecoms infrastructure. You don't achieve growth by bashing corporations or regulating them out of existence. Rayner and Haigh can't get away with acting like gobby student union reps any more now they've got actual grown up positions of power. At this rate there will be nothing left to tax.

On the flip side, by taking said investment money, we are saying it's OK to fire 800 workers and replace with cheap labour.

I don’t and chose my words very carefully. The basic dynamic doesn’t change though. You can attract investment, usually at some sort of cost, or companies can invest elsewhere or hold back. It’s their choice but they are of course on hot competition with other ports. The reason DP World are looking to expand its container operation is to take business from competitors, obviously. My guess in particular Felixstowe, whose operation might be efficient, but transport links (A14, A12) are pathetic.

Other companies are not available. If Peel Ports, for example, owns Liverpool’s deep sea container operation, which it does, it owns it.

Sorry my comment wasn't aimed at you, rather at those seeking to use the issue to damage/have a go at the government. I suppose my views are coloured by a free subscription to the Telegraph app through a friend. The paper has reached new depths since the election when it comes to bias which even CCHQ would struggle to match. It's all very Trumpian and its current ludicrous main headline is "Labour peer tipped to be next ambassador to the US is friend of Lord Alli" [Post edited 12 Oct 2024 16:34]

That’s the trouble with media. Most of it is rubbish. I notice that Johnson writes in the Daily Mail (or a no mark flunky does it for him). They deserve each other and the cat litter that it’ll be used for. Mrs C likes that rag for the tv pages/magazine on a Saturday and I’m way too cowardly to battle her over it! 😃

Changed was to wasn't in my post. My parents, despite never voting Tory, always bought the Mail because there was a lot of reading in it and they liked the crosswords, puzzles etc. [Post edited 12 Oct 2024 16:38]

He sacked Sue Grey last week and now he's chucking one of his ministers under the bus. He definitely has a ruthless streak.
