In what circumstances would/should you hand in your notice from one job before having found another job?

I was going to say that 'constructive dismissal' is another example of when you might hand in your notice before having another job lined up.

Your story sounds horrible and sorry you had to experience that. Its only a guess, but I reckon when they found out you might want to leave, they panicked, found someone else who they thought could replace you but only had a limited window to hire him/her, didn't want to be paying two salaries and then hounded you out. Not nice.

Along those lines. They'd interviewed someone for a different position who they thought might fit my role. As I hadn't given a specific leaving date, they wanted to force it while tis person was still available.

We parted on reasonably good terms in the end, after the awkwardness had been addressed and put away. Indeed, they got me back to do some database maintenance bits afterwards.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

A number of years ago, I was in a job i hated as I had a team leader i didn't get along with and they made my life a misery. I kept a record of the regular bollokings over nothing I got and emails accusing me of finishing early etc when I hadn't! One day I just walked out as I'd had enough. I did however threaten to sue them for constructive dismissal so they paid me a large sum to go away. If you are facing similar issues, that's the way to go. An employment lawyer will assist you if you have a case. It won't cost you anything either. Their fee will be included in the settlement!
