Chaplin has a role to play but rarely as a starter. He can still be a useful sub, offering a different threat to our other attackers but particularly against teams like Brentford we need to match their physicality. At the end of the season Chappers will have been involved in a decent number of games. Hopefully he will have bagged a goal or two but his main role is in the leadership group helping get te best out of the whole squad. In a newly formed squad that role is crucial. |  | | |

He showed on Saturday what he can add to the team. He's just always going to struggle in terms of physicality and getting around the pitch, sadly, which I fear will limit his minutes.

Forget all about who is the better player for a moment. We're entering a dogfight and for that you need teamwork and confidence. Omari is a brilliant footballer bit it looks like he's overthinking it at the moment. We've built tactics around chappers for years now and he's got a point to prove. Leif hasn't found a blue shirt from a corner all season yet as soon as chappers gets on against everton, the old low cross to chappers at the near post works. Omari by my count has managed the lobbed ball over the top of the left back for burns once this season. Chappers has done it at least twice from his 30ish minutes in total off the bench.
For all he's done for us, he deserves a proper chance.

I'm not sure there is any evidence that Szmodics is better than Chaplin. He scored more goals last season, but in a different position, while Chaplin helped his team to 2nd in the league rather than 19th.
I would definitely start one of them at number ten against Brentford. Hutchinson on the right. And surely it has to be Broadhead on the left. |  |

If Szmodics isn't better than Chaplin, why on earth did we pay £9m for him, aged 29?

Not sure if I would go with Chaplin from the start for this game, but definitely someone I'd be looking at for the Leicester game.
I would probably tweak the system a little bit if it was me personally. I'd be more in favour of going towards more of a 3-4-3 for this one which is still probably quite similar to how we would line up when we are on the ball.

I would bring Hirst in. Brentford play with some big lads at the back which will suit Hirst more than Delap having a physical battle. I'd have Delap and Szmodics playing close to him. Delap is a threat when dribbling with the ball and Szmodics is happy to run beyond a striker, something we'd need to do to disjoint a back 3.
It's something that might not be popular, but I don't like how we've performed away from home this season and it's something I would try.
Omari has been exposed to a lot of football with us and England U21's this season. It's not a case of dropping him, partly protecting him too but he could be a really good impact player off the bench for this game. |  |
