Can we replace Ogbene in squad? 15:11 - Nov 1 with 2107 viewsSamuelowen88

Do we have to wait until Jan?
Or can we replace now?

Can a U21 play/ be in squad? Or not as not listed in original squad?

In Jan, but U21s don't have to be registered. Not sure if we have any non u21s that aren't registered in the squad (unless we recall a loanee but still we can only do this in Jan if there's a recall option in the agreement)

We'll wait for January. I wonder if we might go for someone like David Brooks on loan.

Weren't we still trying to sign Broja on loan right until the end of deadline day? Does that mean we still have a space in the squad or was someone else going to be left out if he had joined?

I suspect Al-Hamadi may have had a loan lined up had that deal gone through.

Does mean we have one of our Premier League loans to fill the space in January without having to commit to anyone permanently.

Difficult then to get a third striker in to support Delap and Hurst though.

It is possible to apply to the Premier League to swap players in or out of the registered squad between windows, tho acceptance isn't automatic. The rules don't go into what might be considered good enough reasons. Logically, you'd expect a player being very long term injured to be satisfactory, but we don't know.

Obviously, the only players we can sign are free agents.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Presumably a young striker who isn't getting into their own club's match day squads for whatever reason would be possible. Alternatively someone who is likely to play ahead of both but that would seem unlikely especially as a loan. It will be interesting approaching January who might be out of favour at a club and potentially available.

I wonder if the striker will be the priority, especially as Delap can play wide right if needed.

Perhaps Al Hamidi ends up at Derby and Harness ends up back here.

When you can only sign a free agent, the answer is black and white, in more ways than one - Newcastle got it right when they signed a certain Shefki Kuqi for this reason. I wonder what he's up to.....

As for Ogbene, it's rotten luck and of course we wish the lad all the best in his recovery. He seems well-liked and has his head screwed on right.

In general it's worth bearing in my mind with this type of question (ie. can we deregister players, can we register new players, can we recall loan players etc.) that the purpose of the rule is more or less to fix your 25-man squad for the entire period between the transfer window.

So there don't tend to be significant workarounds. There's only really 3 and there's very specific reasons for all of them.

(1) Teams that haven't used all their slots can register a free agent. This one helps under-strength teams and out-of-work players, so is seen as a win-win.

(2) Your U21s don't have to be registered and you're allowed to pick them whenever you like. This one facilitates the promotion of youth team players who have kicked on in-season, otherwise they'd never be able to get a game.

(3) You can register emergency loan goalkeepers if you demonstrably have a shortage. This is because having a specialist keeper is deemed a bare minimum for a team to be minimally competitive.

That's all of them.
