Wow. Just wow.

If the officials are that out of touch with the game then it's in even more trouble than I feared it was. The fact that he can't even grasp the directions players are going as he's watching the replay...

Wow.

So presumably Phillips action was not a collision as collisions are exempt from sanction.

It's not that he can't spot a penalty at all. If the penalty had been given, I'm 100% certain Gallagher would have agreed it was a penalty. He is just ultra reluctant to question his chums and rubber stamps the 'process'. It's a bit pathetic to see really.

Pretty sure Gallagher said that the defender was standing his ground. That would imply that Chaplin ran into him which is clearly nonsense. I have watched the incident several times and have tried not to use my blue tinted glasses and I simply cannot see how any of the explanations given to support the referee's decision make any sense whatsoever. I was not sure that the Jack Clarke incident in the Everton game was a foul but it wasn't a glaringly obvious error by the ref and yet the penalty was overturned. As there was a case for not giving a penalty I think the decision could have gone either way so although disappointed I did not feel a sense of injustice. Try as I might I cannot see how the incident on Saturday was not a foul on Chaplin. If it is a foul then it is a penalty, end of story. VAR was presumably intended to reassure supporters and clubs that in the majority of cases on field errors by the officials in potentially match changing moments would be corrected. If VAR is not achieving that then one of the main reasons for having it disappears. The lack of consistency continues despite the technology and it is difficult not to feel disillusioned. I have been going to matches at Portman Road since 1967 and I cannot remember ever feeling more fed up at the end of a game than I did on Saturday. It is not just that Ipswich had the rough end of things that annoyed me but also the sheer frustration that the game itself is still suffering from dreadful adjudications despite the resources that have been poured into the VAR technology and officials. As ever Kieran McKenna was polite and restrained in his post match reaction but he was clearly furious. If VAR is to stay the powers that be must get a grip and sort it out.

Said to my friends earlier, I don’t think VAR should be run by well known established referees. As evidenced by Gallagher, all these refs just stick up for their mates.

Mike Dean is the worst, yesterdays game called Martinez’s challenge a straight red even after seeing multiple replays, and then changed his mind conveniently after VAR decided it was only a yellow. It’s pure bias to stick up for their friends.

100% agree. In my opinion there absolutely needs to be completely independent specialist VAR teams that are NOT premier league referees. VAR and PL referees need to be totally separate entities. This is the only way to ensure full transparency when VAR decisions are being made in the moment. Especially with all the pressure that entails. Unfortunately, with the current set up there is clearly a conflict of interest with the referees one week being VAR and the next on field referees. As you alluded to, they all know each other and a lot are probably mates whilst quite obviously some stronger personalties within the group than others. So It is only human nature that there would be an unconscious or conscious bias at times, which we have already had confirmed by Mike Dean in this jaw dropping article on the BBC Website where incredibly he admits deliberately not making the right VAR decision to protect his referee mate during one game (See article link below). I am also quite sure that this is not a rarity either, for him or his colleagues.

I am a National North Assistant.

I train with Football league Match Officials and observers
General consensus last night at training was a penalty and Philips was unfortunate.

In real time from my position on Saturday I also thought there was an easy soft free kick on Morsy in the build up to the goal. I changed my opinion having watched the highlights. Although I have still seen them given.

On the penalty the disappointing aspect for me was why it wasn't reviewed. I see no excuse for that. It will only be a matter of weeks before we see an identical "collision" elsewhere and this WILL be reviewed and subsequently given.

I could square the circle much easier in my head if there was no VAR and it was simply a ref error.
