and I know I'll get a shed load of down votes too. I was convinced Phillips should have been withdrawn, if not at half time, then very soon afterwards. He got away with a borderline red card in the first half and we had midfield options to see out the majority of the second half. Then, when seeing out the win was by far the priority, he brings on four attacking players in the latter stages when we should be defending, not chasing. Last season we had effective defensive midfield cover in Ball and Travis, this year we have nothing; this is what was needed on Saturday. KM and the supporters can moan about VAR and the referee 'till the cows come home, but we're making errors and it will cost us. |  | | |  |

I agree Kalvin should have been subbed soon after his first yellow
He is a cracking player, but he does put in some robust tackles and is always at risk of a pernickity ref who is a bit card-happy
It's a dangerous game trying to defend a One Nil, but I think we should have tried exactly that |  | | |

2 minutes later he gets sent off.
Cant really criticise KM on much but I thought bringing Clarke & Burns on made us weaker as in body strength. When you are 1 - 0 up and almost getting your first win maybe maybe ask the players who are bossing it, Chaplin, Sammy, Delap & Hutch to suck it up and give 90 minutes and rest them for next week or give less minutes. Think he went over to tell them to hold off on a sub to see how Davis was, he was shouting over to the bench and pointing at Davis, indicating hamstring injury and then ran over to get the message across.
Obviously Davis ended up being fine but within that time Philips got sent off! [Post edited 4 Nov 2024 16:19]

Sending on the subs we do doesn’t have the same affect as they did in L1 or the champ.
We’ve got to change how we do things if we want to stay up. Might not be pretty… but, what do we want from this season? |  |

I don’t know how Davis managed to stay on for the full 90 minutes. He could barely walk towards the end and really their right winger should have made a better job of the advantage he had. |  | | |

He rarely replaces defenders, never really has. He prefers to replace his forward line and use the fresher players to chase and close down the opposition defence and midfield. I am guessing he was concerned about Davis who had already gone down earlier and also which of Morsy/Phillips to replace.
Last season Ball only played a total of 140 mins and Travis 330 mins compared to 3,752 for Morsy and 3,175 for Luongo.
He has hardly ever replaced a player on a booking who he considers critical to the team else Morsy would only ever finish 50% of matches. |  | | |

KmK would love to see our attacking tactics work in the prem, and it would probably reflect better on his management style if they did, far more than showing he can also sit back and grind out a win would.

I've seen a few people say Phillips' first yellow was a borderline red. Not sure if I'm biased, but I don't think that was at all the case. It was certainly a forearm to the back of the head but it wasn't a swinging elbow, it was more of a heavy push, i.e just transferring the weight of his travel rather than lashing out. I'm happy it could be a yellow, but don't see how that's even close to a red. |  |

yes, unfortunately the extra 5 minutes probably cost us the win, but plenty of hindsight there.
Burns is better at defending than Hutchinson so that made sense. Szmodics had been fairly anonymous so having Clarke - a player capable of holding the ball & drawing fouls - made sense to me.
Until the red card, we had been in control of the second half & looked more likely to score a second than concede. As referees usually add nearly 10 minutes to a second half these days. I don't want us to be desperately defending for too long. |  |

I agree, not even sure it warranted a yellow bearing in mind some other challenges going in especially by their number 6 and also Vardeys assault on O’Shea.
I am fairly sure the ref missed it anyway, so must have been helped out by the 4th official or VAR.
He also missed our penalty shout and missed the fact that Philips pulled out of his challenge on the Leicester player when he got his second yellow. Shame 4th official and VAR missed those as well. | | | |

He’s a young manager having his first season as manager in the Prem, so mistakes are going to happen. Personally, I think he was too late making subs at Brentford. Being so close to the action, you could see Hirst and Szmodics were absolutely knackered and should’ve come off 10 minutes earlier, and then who knows what happens at 2-2.
It’s easy to say ifs and buts when we lose, but I do think he has to adapt more this season and be flexible with the shape and formations. All this said, let’s not forget the amount of games were won last season from his substitutes. | | | |
