not to be an arsehole, but £70m for changing the head of state doesn't seem like terrible value - maybe a bit pricey, but not too bad. A like for like comparison would be to check how much its costs the French or Amercians to usher in their presidents (which also happens more often of course, so it would need to be an average over the years).

Yer right, it's difficult to know. May I suggest a small experiment? What if we treat Charles and Co to madam Guillotine and see how it effects tourist numbers?

I did suggest that once offing them in public, monthly, different methods to prevent boredom, starting with the minor ones. Think of the crowds, souvenir stalls (Blackadder), tv rights, Hello Magazine last words etc. Make a fortune! So your somewhat wet liberal weak suggestion? Why not.

Back on planet earth after giving my face a slap, it’s actually impossible to know whether the existence of the Royals brings in tourism or not. My honest view is that it doesn’t, but something like a Coronation, State Wedding or funeral probably does but I’ve no evidence either way to justify the view. Just a feeling.

I don’t think the cost of the coronation was that great in the great scheme of things and if you are going to do it, do it properly.

My issue with Monarchy has nothing to do with the individuals or the cost. For me it’s about the constitution, principle, the preservation of privilege and class system, House of Lords and the very idea that somebody can be head of state because they were born of somebody else. But I know the majority disagree and have plenty of reasons to do so, not least the alternative.

Each to their own and after all we do in theory live in a democracy so if the majority of the people want a King/Queen so be it. May be modify it a bit? Less fawning lickspittles, toadies and flunkies and a bit more 21st century?
