Now that the club has confirmed Morsy chose not to wear the armband, how do our LGBTQ fans feel about this?
Like I say I would continue the interesting conversation we were having but that thread is locked.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

you don't get to tell anyone anything online. you get to express an opinion. i expressed an opinion. people will do whatever they want to do. it's not complicated is it?

Your opinion is that people should move on, why? If you’re not interested then feel free to keep your opinions to yourself and extract yourself from the discussion.

because the rainbow tractor statement said it all pretty much and after 22 pages the discussion isn't saying anything new. strange opinion to get angry about.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

to all the LGBTQ community who have a problem with Morsy refusing to wear the ribbon

If, to show your tolerance and create an atmosphere of inclusivity you were hearby forced to wear a HIJAB or one of those white smock things the muslim lads wear on Fridays (with the hat thing) to the next home game would that be OK with you?

If you refused, you would lose your season ticket because bigot/islamiphobic etc.

Wouldn't it be offensive if everyone turned up wearing them? I remember there was a lot of hate when Newcastle fans did it.

However if there was a captain of the supporters group who wouldn't do it then you'd hope the supporters club would choose one that would be happy to represent the supporters club appropriately.

The comparison is clear.

The LGBT team are angrily trying to force people to wear apparel that celebrates and endorses their lifestyle, on to people who either don't care about or disagree with it.

The up and down arrows on the news article ("statement from club on Morsy") comments thread show that this is very clearly a minority opinion. Overwhelmingly supporting Morsy.

Are they willing to be a recipient of their own logic?

Lifestyle? What an abhorrent individual you are.

I find it staggering that there are people who ‘disagree’ with being a member of that community.

What is happening here? Have we dethawed a selection of people from the Middle Ages?

just for challenging the minority narrative and pointing out the special treatment angrily demanded.

I don't think that's very "tolerant" and "inclusive". It's name calling and personal abuse I consider it rather disrespectful.

That's how you lose the argument.

I notice no one has addressed my original point. Because you can't, Because the stance that Morsy must wear the ribbon or he is a bad person is an illogical one that demands special treatment for one group of people, at the expense of other groups beliefs. Not tolerant and not inclusive, as we have seen in this small snapshot.

good and interesting post. but there are still two issues in this discussion. one is the need for the club and all of us to be non-discriminatory, non-bigoted, respectful, inclusive and welcoming. i don't think i've seen anyone on the thread seriously dispute that. equally your post shows why inclusion is so important. the degree of consensus about the need to be inclusive and respectful on here seems very positive to me. the second issue is whether the gesture of wearing an armband or bootlace really affects things in the real world to the extent that someone should be compelled to do so, or should be condemned and attacked if they choose not to. even after 20 pages i don't believe that someone should be compelled to go along with something if they have reservations and the scheme shouldn't put individuals in that invidious position.

"the second issue is whether the gesture of wearing an armband or bootlace really affects things in the real world to the extent that someone should be compelled to do so, or should be condemned and attacked if they choose not to. even after 20 pages i don't believe that someone should be compelled to go along with something if they have reservations and the scheme shouldn't put individuals in that invidious position."

That's a few different points... Firstly, does such a gesture affect anything? A few people on this thread for whom this topic is directly relevant say it does makes a difference to them. They're better placed than most to answer. There is also a good number of sportspeople who later came out gay who say they wish there had been a more inclusive environment while still playing. So, yes, probably it does make a difference.

Then there is the point about compelling someone to do something. He has not been compelled - he chose not to and still captained the team.

And then there is speculation about his reasoning. We do not know what his 'reservations' are. Perhaps he doesn't like the organisation behind the specific initiative but is still supportive of people who are LGBT+. Perhaps he's worried about the repercussions for his family (something that still scares my friend). Perhaps he doesn't like certain colours. Perhaps he believes it's a lifestyle choice (!) that he disapproves of. Perhaps he's just bigoted. Unless he's clear why, people will assume the worst.

Real talent (in all things, not just football) is scarce, so why would any leader not want the best people, performing the best that they can? If you cannot put personal opinions aside for the good of the team, then you should not be a leader.

No one has addressed the point? There's been 21 pages of discussing and addressed points if you cared to review them.

You clearly don't wish too but feel the need to share your bigotry views which aren't welcome here.

Why have you capitalised hijab? It just means scarf.

Islamic dress is cultural not religious hence why it varies so much. And if you mean a thobe, those vary massively too for men, including colour.

The compulsion to cover one’s head or even dress islamically comes from an interpretation of modesty. The garments aren’t prescribed.

What you’re asking people to do is dress like a stereotype at best. Besides that, I’ve not a clue what point you think you’re making.

To be fair to the board, it’s not clear what you’re trying to do. Your original point was pointless, as there isn’t a stance that claims he must wear the armband or he’s a bad person. That’s not what most people are saying. To extrapolate to that point from some arrows on a news story is a bit of a leap.
