It's Peter Mandelson. Starmer has literally zero substance or perhaps like Mandelson he's in the thrall of big business. T.I.N.A. [Post edited 21 Dec 2024 9:08]

I have little respect for Mandleson. But he is clearly an extremely savvy political operator. Being assigend to a job that is going to need precisely that.

He will be good at negotiating the slippery, dishonest, bigotted nonsense that Trump will be running, and exerting influence.

Did you the same when David Cameron was made Foreign Secretary?

Given who is in charge of the US and that we require a decent relationship with the biggest economy in the world what kind of person should be put in this role? You seem to be against anyone who knows how to be politically or business savvy. What attributes should they have to benefit our country and get the most from having that position and contact?

Integrity and a sense of the common good would be a good starting point. What do you mean exactly by, "getting the most?"

I don't want to hijack the discussion but I'd be interested to see the working out that arrives at the answer, "David Cameron is a savvy political operator".

Despite Corbyn's many failings you at least knew the politics he represented domestically were in the interests of common humanity and decency....Mandelson, Starmer, Reeves, Streeting etc.....not so much!

I mean that whoever is put in the position will need to use soft power and diplomacy to deal with the odious regime in place to get the most business and generally favourable political influence for this country from the worlds richest economy and most influential government. It's a fine line, but that's what diplomacy is all about. I'd rather be pragmatic and have a smarmy politically adept type than a nicer type championing integrity using up what little power they wield and ultimately the relationship and potential benefits going backwards with nothing gained in return. My point is that it's not 'vacuous' to appoint pragmatically a smarmy operator just because you, or I, may not like how they do things.

Jeez, that’s a low bar. Talk about plumbing the depths. Shiny Cameron had an almost complete lack of judgement on just about everything. Name one thing he got right? Perfect for Foreign Secretary then….
