Is a 9-dart finish more impressive than a hole in one? 13:30 - Dec 27 with 2551 views | Illinoisblue | Or does a perfect hat-trick trump both of those for sporting excellence? Got to give it to the dart player; got to be so accurate 9 times in a row. No margin for error. And even an average golfer can fluke a hole in one.

Agree re 147, disagree re Darts. You are only a few feet away, no conditions to worry about, big target. How hard can it be? (Very - I’m rubbish at darts). With golf you are aiming from anything up to about 200 yards away. Lots of variables. Never done it, though come close three times including once this summer.

I’d argue the German one is tougher. I’ve always seen darts as a game, not a sport. Sports should at least involve elevating your heart rate through physical activity imo.

Self contradiction there , you said yourself hole in one almost 3 times …….you will never get anywhere near a 9 darter as long as you have ……a hole in one’s ar£e , excuse the pun .

Ahh, but I’ve played a lot more golf than darts. I am lucky if I hit the board! Not good and not a game that I find interesting, personally. It’s a bit…… one dimensional for me. Aim, throw, bollx up the scoreboard, back to one’s pint. I’d add I’ve never seen anyone do a hole in one ‘live’ in all my years. Somebody in a group in front managed it about 15 years ago, but I didn’t see it.

Hole in ones are rarer by the looks of it. Tiger Woods has had 20 in his 40+ years of playing golf. Some pros have had more, but it’s rare they get more than an average of one a year over their careers. Luke Littler has had four nine darters just in 2024 alone. I’m surprised by that. I’d have thought a 9 darter would be harder, but based on rarity a hole in one is more impressive.

Is a 9-dart finish more impressive than a hole in one? on 16:07 - Dec 27 with 1757 views | gainsboroughblue | I'm no golf expert but you're more aiming to get the ball on the green/closer to the pin (depending on length) rather than sinking it aren't you? That would make it more luck than judgement. The nine darter is impressive but not the rare commodity it once was. I remember it being six years between John Lowe and Paul Lim doing it on the TV, then a whole decade before Phil Taylor and Shaun Greatbatch did them. You hear of them being hit multiple times in tournaments now but the overall standard is crazy nowadays, plus the trebles (maybe?) are a bit bigger.

I believe Shaun Murphy the snooker player has achieved the hole in one, the 9 darter and of course the 147. he rates th 9 darter as technically the hardest. 147s are commonplace now in both practice and tournament play.

It depends on the difficulty and conditions. If for example you are playing over 130 yards of water to a narrow green with shrubs or whatever behind, you’ll aim at the green and hope, unless you’re a top player. Even they’ll play tactically if it’s a really tough hole and a competition where a missed shot could catastrophically end their chances. You have to play the course and the conditions On a reasonable day playing a relatively simple hole at say under 150 yards in for example a golf society competition, I’ll go for the pin believing I have a chance. Of course, I don’t. Not a snowballs chance in hell, but you can dream. It should be remembered that for nearly all players there will be a couple of holes on a normal course where a hole in one is even vaguely possible.

Why is it luck if you aim at the pin and it goes in the hole? It’s what you aimed for so if you succeed it’s skill and very rare because it’s so difficult.

I'm no golfer but my understanding is that most of the time players are aiming for a good spot on the green rather than the pin itself, plus external factors such as wind that you have very little control over once the ball is in the air. Having said that I think a hole-in-one tournament with the top players could be quite interesting, to see how hard it really is when everybody is really going for it!
