Corner shenanigans 12:08 - Jan 17 with 3358 viewsRimsy

What's happened with defending corners this season? The ridiculous grappling is ruining this part of the game. Nobody is actually watching the ball, they are all wrestling each other. Refs seem incapable of getting it under control, they need to start booking everyone. Our own players are as culpable as anyone else.

It’s gone to a new level for sure.

There was a corner last night where the cameras showed a Brighton player just leaning into Walton like a bull. He was bent over with his head and shoulder pushing him. How is that part of the game now?

If they let the corner come in and then gave a foul it would stop almost immediately I'd have thought

Totally agree , Rimsy .

It seems to have got worse as it goes unpunished , the refs should book both players .

The amount of cheating , including diving in the modern game is ruining it , but the authorities do nothing to stop it

It is ridiculous. Wolfy got away with a blatant push too in second half.

I don't how we didnt concede a penalty last night from them, but also how few freekicks we got to.

On the pen side, there was one, I think it was wolfy, maybe wes, can't quite remember, but they've literally got back to ball, and wrestled the player off the pitch and onto the floor

Yet also greaves had one against him where the brighton player hooked his arm and pulled him out the way.

The advice from PGMOL is that if both players are grabbing/holding, then no foul should be given.

From page 44 of the PGMOL guidelines:

Considerations
• Players who only focus on an opponent and pay no attention to challenging for the ball and have a material impact, should be penalised
• Where both players are involved in simultaneous and similar actions (mutual holding), play should be allowed to continue.
• Where one player clearly holds an opponent and this action clearly impacts the opponent’s movement and/or the ability to play or challenge for the ball (material impact), this action should be penalised
• Where one player solely focuses on an opponent and makes a clear non-footballing action that clearly impacts the progress of the opponent, this action should be penalised

That first point tells me you should see a penalty given at almost every corner.

Yeah. I'd imagine the difficulty of it is deciphering where only one player is guilty and not both. It's almost like you need technology to help clamp down with it......

Something needs to be done as corners are just farcical at the moment.

Change the rules

At corners, 5 players from each team only are allowed in the box and no player can stand in front of the goal keeper.

I think for the most part our set piece defending has been fine, been disappointed with our attacking set pieces though, especially when employing Mark Hudson as a set piece coach.

They mentioned on comms we’ve only conceded two goals from set pieces this season. But at the other end…. Very poor. Poor delivery, poor execution .

Not until the corner has been taken though as they can only be given when play is in progress.

For all Davis' qualities - he's delivered some brilliant crosses from open play this season, Fulham and Brentford away to mention two - you would think he could offer more from set pieces. The only other player I would particularly trust from set pieces would be Taylor but we can't get him in the side.

I don't like how refs delay the taking of the corner to deal with the offence every time like resetting a scrum in rugby. I don't see the refs job as being one where they're there to preventatively advise on conduct and coach players through it. They're there to give the decisions in response to the actions of players. If there's already an offence taking place and you're not happy with it just give the freekick to the defending team or penalty to the attacking team. It would soon stop such nonsense.

Agreed. One warning, then just blow as soon as the corner is taken.

Problem is, half of them would probably be pens then!

We conceeded a lot of corners last night. I fail to see how our defenders can attack the ball in when they are facing the wrong way and just looking to block the attacker. As soon as the attacker has skipped past, the defender has no idea where the ball is.

I think it was our relegation from the championship season they decided to crack down on this. Lots of warnings before the season started. Week 2 I think we had a penalty given against us for it. After that it was forgotten.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Or use the Six Yard Box markings and say either
A) only the goalkeeper is allowed in the six yard box when the corner is taken.

Or

B) only members of the defending team are allowed in the Six Yard Box when the corner is taken.

Either would be much easier to police than what we have now.

And yet is not deemed a foul. Tap a player on the leg and he goes down like he's been shot, and a free kicks is given. Unless he's wearing a blue shirt of course!

I actually disagree somewhat. if you actually look back we have had some excellent opportunities on some superb deliveries from corners this season. Unfortunately it is the execution that has been lacking, more often than not, especially disappointedly from free headers that went way off target. Off the top off my head (no pun intended!) and certainly not meaning to pick on anyone, but guilt-edged chances for O’Shea, Greaves and Burgess do come to mind but I’m sure there have been others.

Have two boxes either side of penalty area, each team stands in their box for corners....no holding etc etc and no impeding the keeper..

Job done.
